I'm in northern california, so can't help much, but my limited experience driving to Disneyland or visiting a friend of ours in Diamond Bar is the freeway system out there blows.

Ventura is nice if currently on fire, the beaches and Mexican food are world-class. their Harbor Village is p dope to visit for seafood / any kind of sea activity. you can take boat rides out to the Channel Islands which are gorgeous and pristine. Lake Casitas is about 25 miles into the foothills and is a nice ass way to spend a weekend. driving inland into the Los Padres National Forest is generally nice as hell there's a ton of hiking / camping stuff around there.

if you're a biker there's a gooorgeeouusss paved trail to neighboring Ojai. wineries all over that area. basically ton of outdoorsy stuff all over Ventura County. good timing too the weather is getting real nice and Cali just came out of Covid protocols.
