Ok, but without the caveat, was it a bad movie at all?

i found it to be pretty boring and found a lot of the characters lacking in... well being characters. that short fat friend and the black kid that rented her were the same if not more interesting than the main.

Asian children can easily relate with Strict Asian Parent stereotype

Pulling this out of my ass, but children of parents from anywhere that is not western-nordic Europe or most of the (suburban/city white kids) in US can relate. I'd hazard a guess and say in the US most black kids and and white kids from the country ("south") can relate as well, though the strictness is not in the same vein and can also be less emotional/more physical.

i dunno, i liked coco and inside out a lot. soul also felt like a complete movie and was enjoyable whereas turning red just felt short

Coco > Inside > Soul >= Red

I loved Turning Red but definitely not the best Pixar movie. They're becoming a lot more Disney-like these days.

Also so many of the musical cues were heavily borrowed from other songs you can tell Billie Eilish and Finneas were influenced by. Ludwig Gorensson too.

What I did appreciate the most was the animation style.

Inside Out is prolly my fave out of modern Pixar but my memory may be influenced by the heavily tattooed Hispanic man in front of me saying to his friends "i can't stop fuckin crying ese"

One of my favorite gags from the new saved by the bell show was when they were trying to get one of the jocks to conquer his emotions so they made him watch “the first ten minutes of Up and the last ten minutes of Coco at the same time”

i liked Coco but didn't love it. it rang slightly inauthentic, i assume because out of the director and two writers only one was half-Mexican with the others honkies. working in another's culture is fine, Shakespeare put in work in Verona, Denmark, Scotland, Rome, and Miyazaki crushes medieval horror Europe, but there were a couple Coco beats that felt a lil broad and pandery.

but also it's a kid's movie developed for consumption by a primarily white mainstream audience so it is what it is

It's weird watching a movie with zero stakes. Like, the biggest stakes in Turning Red is being embarrassed cause her mom was snooping on her at school and shouted at her that she forgot her tampons. It's pretty much down hill from there. Even the climax of the movie felt lower stakes than that lol

Well, potentially transforming permanently into a giant beast you cannot fully control because you're an emotional teenager is pretty moderate stakes. It's heavily implied Ming tried to pull the same thing as Mei and ended up giving her mother the huge scar. Mei was being a typical teenager who thought she could control a power instead of vice versa and it could have easily blown up in her face.

I do feel like a lot fell apart in the 3rd act, to be fair.

Coco hit me so fucking hard because I watched it like 4 months after my mom died.

So I'm a bit biased for that movie having the most impact compared to Inside Out.
