Been playing Aion Classic for about a year. It's not golden era FFXI -- there are too many things that are not world spawns that matter, and gear progression is vertical instead of lateral -- but it at least has some world spawns that drop BIS items.

Finally got my white whale item of this game -- took camping 8-10 hours a day (16-26hr window, no 30m/1hr mini windows like XI) for eight months. Only missed three days cuz of work trips, and got outclaimed five or six times. I won't even use the dagger since it's a PVP item and PVP is almost as stupid and as uninteresting as instances. It's a symbol of my dedication to world spawns that I was more willing to camp a PVP dagger to not use it than "hardcore PVPers."

And yeah, just like with my Hecatomb Subligar in XI, this meant more to me than a lot of work/academic accomplishments. It was the first time in a long time I've been actually happy and I also realized that it's been a while now since I've thought about suicide. I never considered myself high risk before, and I still don't, but thinking back on it I realize how much my thoughts dwelled on it and how unhealthy it was.

Riot (Microtransactions) and Blizzard (bringing gaming to casuals, especially in MMOs, and instances) really fucked over gaming, and I will forever hate Mizuki Ito for caving into that latter trend for XI.

While I can't wrap my head around your obessession and mania regarding this type of game play, I can attest that I have also spent hours grinding, camping, or crafting to get things I will never use simply so that I can have them.

Setting a personal goal to obtain something and being proud of that achievement is one thing. Trying to obtain something for the sole purpose of someone else not having it, and being more happy that you obtained it instead of the other person (zero sum) instead of being happy you obtained it in general is another.

The achievement only matters because it is a zero sum achievement. Anyone/everyone can achieve gear that's just grinding an instance repeatedly, farming PvP contribution, etc. This dagger only matters because there was a limitation external to myself that had to be overcome to get it.

And it will only matter for any other person in the game because they will have to go through me to get it.

Just like FFXI, I never missed a King even after I had everything I could use from Kings. I never missed a Fafnir ever, despite not being a WAR who needed Ridill. I never missed a KB ever, despite not being a main tank (though after I got a D.Ring I ended up actually tanking).

No but why does that matter? My point is that my attendance at world spawns has never been linked to needing/wanting a drop from them. I've always camped just to deny other tribes access and to monopolize for my tribe.

I've always come to explain that internally by arguing that MMOs simulate the start of society where things are truly based on meritocracy. Everyone starts from zero; so it really is the people who work harder and are otherwise more deserving that get ahead.

Of course, RMT throws all of that out of balance, which is just like how generational wealth gives undeserving individuals advantages in life.
