Steam Deck specific - I'd recommend just capping it at 30 fps and maxing all the graphic settings. You could do 40 or leave it uncapped but you'll still get frame drops in the cities and some areas, just lock it to 30 and you'll be rock solid. The game doesn't have any tight timing requirements so the added latency shouldn't bother you, and 30fps is easy to digest on a smaller screen like that. And 30 fps cap will give you like 3.5 to 4 hours of battery life

Also - use great sword on the Hero until later in the game when you get a storyline specific 1 hander (it should be eminently clear what weapon I mean if you make it that far).

only a couple hours in but runs p consistently at 60 thus far. battery life is garbo but w/e used to that after maxing a couple Yakuza games i'd rather get frames and recharge. will keep in mind for Blighttown areas tho

And yes the game is by default fairly easy, entirely up to you if you wanted to draconian it up. Afaik there are zero achievements or anything tied to the draconian quests, just your ego.

As you progress further in the game you'll hit more and more areas that drag down the fps. Since the frame rate has no effect on the actual gameplay (since it's all turn based), I just decided to not deal with any of the inconsistency and just capped it at 30 for the sweet sweet battery life.

I used Draconian difficulty until about 70% of the way through, it starts to get more tedious than challenging for everything but bosses around that point.
