I am a den leader for my cub scout troop. We go camping. WE JUST GO CAMPING AND KNOW WHAT DO.

I have to take the camping skills training for girl scouts, and just had to watch a 5+ minute video on how to use a camp stove.

Like. They explained how to open the lid.

Fuck.

TAKE YOUR DAUGHTERS CAMPING.

As an aside. I had my most "women can do anything" moment at our last cub scout trip. They needed volunteers from the leaders to take the swim test in order to take the boys out on canoes. We are a huge troop, and I'd say we had about 15 leaders there.

Only 5 volunteered for the test. I was the only woman that volunteered. Had to swim 100 yards, basically non-stop (4 laps of a pool. We were allowed to readjust at the end of the lane, but were not allowed to rest. Three laps forward, one lap backwards). And I fucking did it bitches. I WAS SLOW, BUT I DID IT. IT'S NOT A RACE.

Not bad for a fatty 42-year-old.

Also, I've lost 17 lbs. Here's hoping I stick to it.

Fun fact btw: I know Cub Scout popcorn is overpriced, but we get like $20 per bag. Girl Scouts get like 25 cents per box.

My son has to booth like two weekends and makes his goal. My daughter has to booth for like 2 months and barely makes her goal.

it's probably especially targeted in girls but feel outdoor skills in general are decaying. i went to Yosemite with a secondary friend group, me + three girls two guys, and not a single one of them knew how to start a fire or pitch a tent. with the huge decline in the Scouts unless an older family member shows you the ropes you boned these days.

My local grocery store literally placed a cone at the furthest automatic door and turned it off so we had to walk out the door closest to their tables.

Very true, except camping is alive and well in CA.

I always have to snag sites like 4+ months in advance, and have yet to go camping at a dead site. They are always full to the brim with campers. Both tents and RVs. It's kinda crazy. For sure part of it is less sites than what there were as a kid, but I def think people could make good money adding one out here, as they are in high demand.

And it isn't like, all boys there hahaha. But I hear you. This is sorely needed for lots of kiddos out there. I cannot stress enough how much fun my kids have when camping. Especially with the cub scouts. It's a blast.
