It's the same for me. Play Music worked just fine. The move seemed purely for monetization and ruined a lot of good features.

100% not "monetization." It boiled down to two things, there were more people using youtube playlists over gp music and It's also silly to double up on storing files in both places if the audio streams are equivalent.

i have like 15k songs on my phone of all the CDs ive ever owned plus ones ive bought digitally so i just listen to those

I ripped about 3k CDs a tiny portion of those being releases for gamemp3s.net. Used to be that I'd run MPD on my home server and stream via icecast/shoutcast, but was more of a faf than I enjoyed. Google Play Music solved that problem for me. Youtube Music is adequate, but GPM was definitely better for me. I hate that they did bring some of the problems in GPM IE pathetic endless playlists, with a semi-random shuffle (it shuffled your songs like 10 at a time), that doesn't go back through your entire collection, but sticks to the more recent stuff.

Speaking of, any of you dudes run a home server? Looking to put together s new thing, that spins up containers aight, but runs like 10 watts or less while idle and is not a nuc type thing.

also yes. easy to check out what your friends are listening to, share playlists, algorithm often recommends good stuff, alerts when favored bands are playing locally. should pay more but A1 service.
