a few years ago Microsoft word or some other program’s spell/grammar check started highlighting two spaces after a period as an error.

years ago when i started teaching someone explained to me why it used to be two spaces but i don’t remember

As of 2020 Microsoft Word autocorrect does only one space after a period, before that it was 2.

I think it was a typewriter thing, which since those aren't around anymore it fell out of favor

i :think: it was because in early typing (typewriters, early computers) you wanted the extra space for editing purposes and because of how the fonts looked

with newer computers and fonts/readability, and more access to proofreading tools, it’s no longer as necessary

It's only ever been one space unless your school or business is being pretentious. Two spaces is like writing in script.
