Garth Ennis writing Punisher and Marvel letting him go wild with the MAX Imprint was a perfect storm of entertainment.
always thought this one of the best moments in the entire Punisher mythos, not just the visceral get fucked ultraviolent takedown of a scumbag that the character rests upon, but Frank rejecting an end to his suffering and the peace of non-existence with his family to return to the world of blood and shit and punishment. the ultimate tragedy of the character is that avenging his family gave him more purpose and belonging than having one ever did. i am home.
Nothing more delicious than finding out Castle's family hated him and his wife was going to ask for a divorce the day they died.
Ghost Rider does it better anyway.
That's not it though, the story was that Maria tried for YEARS to make things work and after herculean effort just realized that as much as she loved Frank, HE would never be happy being a family man.
And she was right!
But Frank ALSO tried to work on the marriage despite absolutely not wanting to because he loved Maria and he loved the kids, but he just wasn't there.
Maybe, once upon a time, this would have been a change to the story, but ever since Punisher: Born it has been the status quo that Frank was a machine made for murder long before the day in the park. For the last 20 years we've known Frank always wanted to be doing what he's doing and the death of his family is his justification for it. We just saw how that looks through Maria's eyes for the first time. Like a marriage that both sides really tried to make work but couldn't, and that's 100% in line with Frank.
He doesn't want to be happy. He doesn't want a wife and kids. And sure, he didn't want them to get murdered, but that was the price he had to pay to live the life he really dreamed of - miserable, grinding, never-ending war.
Anyone who wants to say Punisher's marriage being unhappy change his story needs to take it up with Garth Ennis, not Jason Aaron, because this has been the character since 2003.

She DID try, but grew to resent and hate him before she was murdered.
