they were undoubtedly effective and mostly punched above their weight but aye they got crushed by Thebes's gay boys before getting crushed by Macedon's bisexual boys. ultimately just too heterosexual to be a really elite fighting force in the ancient world.

The phalanx eventually fell out of the meta so to speak, but one on one the Spartan was probably still one of the best pre-firearms warriors. I think that the utility of the spear and shield combo could make him competitive with a few fighters with more refined technology and weapons.

honestly they were all so queer it's hard to keep track but the did get got by Thebes who was the first (only?) military to formally institutionalize same-sex romantic love as a mechanism of warfare

nah my brother, the Spartan hoplite only had utility in a phalanx formation (which romped on Athens/the Persians before as stated getting fucked by both Thebes and Macedon). far superior one on one fighters in the historical record.

pre-firearms prolly nothing could compare to a knight in plate. plate made em nearly invulnerable as long as they stayed standing + trained extensively for one on one combat unlike most of the better historical warriors who did essentially all their fighting in formation.
