You might still have to check on an individual basis though, there're definitely some games that don't allow it

It’s kind of a weird gray area, games that give you “free PS5 upgrade” your save data seems to transfer just fine but games that specifically have a new PS5 version, it won’t work. Persona 5 Royal comes to mind.

PS4 games and their saves transfer just fine to play in PS4 mode. PS4 games and saves with upgrades also transfer just fine paid or not.
