The dog the Russians shot into space for Sputnik II. Kruschev gave them 1 month to complete the project so one of the corners they cut was having any plan to retrieve her. Wouldn't have mattered anyway because they didn't properly insulate the capsule so she died within 5 hours of launch, terrified and in pain.
