ELI5: Why do people buy drones without any sort of tracking device on them? If my city is an accurate sample of the country, these people lose drones the way a person loses socks.

Real answer is it's too expensive. You can get into mediocre drone flying for cheap, with some sort of video streaming for flight, but none of those comes with any sort of gps location or auto-fly home. Those features are just out of the price range.

I had a neat $150ish one, worked great and streamed laggy video to my phone, but yeah I learned quick that if I had a feeling I couldn't control it and was gonna lose it to wind or something that I needed to focus more on precisely where it is about to drop rather than doing some maneuver I didn't have mastered to save the flight. It just wasn't going to work and I'd spend more time trying to figure out where it was lol.

How far are these drones going? I doubt a tile would help beyond a couple hundred feet.

400-500ft for the budget ones, before spotty signal starts messing with flight in one way or another. Enough that if you didn't pay attention to which tree it was over or where in the tall bushes/grass it fell you might have trouble locating it depending on how noticable it's painted or designed. I had a black and orange one that I could easily lose in trees if I didn't pay attention to where it fell. Now, getting it out of a tree is another matter entirely lol.

It doesn't sound like much, but send your drone 400ft in the air in any suburban or urban area and, at least for me, your heart starts skipping cause your drone looks like a little black dot and the strong winds are sending it sideways, how do I fight the wind and stay level, oh God dodge the trees, fuck fuck fuck...

I get those model that have proper engines and run on what I presume to be gasoline. They pretty much seem to mimic actual planes. I don't get drones.
