This might go on a couple paragraphs but stay with me.

So recently I have been shopping for jeans. I always buy Levi's or Lee. Last time it was Lee. At first they felt ok but they haven't worn well. They got too tight in the hips and the upper thighs. (I'm very skinny and always buy regular straight leg) I don't know if they were just made wrong in the first place or have just shrunk over time. I am looking at Levi's again because they have a lot of fit options. I remember the last pairs of Levis I had were iffy. I had a couple good pairs and a couple bad ones. Really bad. They were paper thin and got frayed and torn really easily.

I have been doing a deep dive into jean quality and the best place to buy them. I know that clothes are made in different places and craftsmanship can vary. Anyway, I found out Levi's has a whole tier system of quality and they do that on purpose. Cheap crap sold at Walmart or Costco. Better stuff from Macy's or certain other department stores. And then their ultra premium jeans. You can tell buy the labels and tags. You can only get them at their official stores or online.

Ok so here's the point. Jeans prices are always out of sight but god almighty!

I typically get the kirkland branded jeans at Costco and those seem to last forever. And you can't beat Costco's return policy if it goes to shit in the first year.

buy $400 jeans that will wear out in 10-15 years, but you might either ruin them or not fit into them during that time frame anyway

$400 jeans, if actually worth that from the craftsmanship, will last your whole life. Of course, there are plenty of people selling subpar craftsmanship for too much.

I guarantee those 400 dollar jeans are also being made in some Chinese or Vietnamese sweatshop for two dollars a pair, including the price to ship them out here. Only reason I've had to get new jeans the last two years and replace my $20 kirkland jeans is I went from 310 in mid 2023, and now down to 248.1

Nah, there are still craftsmen using quality materials with quality knowledge to make quality products. The problem is too many of us don't value quality knowledge as much as they should; they think that knowledge is free. Having $100 in materials and $100 in labor should reasonably cost $400 in total for a retail store by the time you factor in profits and economics. That's just how the world works.

You might save some money if you take out the retail store and sell directly to the consumer, but even then the price makes sense if it's if sufficient quality.

I highly doubt even on Levi's top end 400 dollar pair jeans, they are spending 200 bucks on labor and materials. Maybe 50-75 tops for the highest end ones. Those mid and cheap brand ones though, maybe cost them 10 bucks a pair tops to make and ship.

And no, I don't cheap out on everything. Had to replace my hoka shoes, and that ran me about 185, but I also know if I take care of them, they are going to last me a few years of every day use. And they are one of the few pairs, that even with using special high arch insoles just don't completely obliterate my feet from a day of walking. Same with my Under Armor tactical boots.
