Discovery just kinda ended on a dud for me.

So it's probably not fair to compare discovery to Starfleet academy, which just seems outright bad so far. I'm not sure who came up with the idea of Star Trek 90210, but it's not great.

The main cast travels back in time to modern day Los Angeles, and as one of the main cast is an undocumented Latino, ICE is portrayed as over the top Nazi like villains. This season came out in 2022 during Biden’s term, fwiw

Yeah which I think is a better ending for his character because almost all of the new characters introduced in season 1 and 2 got swept to the side with nary a mention for the return of the OG cast in season 3 (which I was totally cool with)

I could have bought an 11 pull and have 1000 gems left over, but all I got was this silly title.

To be fair, filming for S2 was supposed to be June 2020, then got delayed to Feb 2021. The scripts probably got revised after the race riots.

I legitimately think playing Ocarina of Time and learning how to puzzle solve the Water Temple, thinking in multiple dimensions with the water level rising/falling did more to elevate my problem solving skills as a 14 year old than anything I was learning in school at the time.

I actually read this piece the other day about how old games were better for improving our critical thinking than modern games

Elden Ring or any of the Souls games are still extremely difficult and require patience and strategic thinking.

If you have a kid and need to PUNISH them for something they did wrong don't take away their games or toys. Sit them down. Get out an old console or use a computer emulator and MAKE them play Ghosts n' Goblins or Ninja Gaiden.

    I'm serious.

Yeah you didn't actually read the article cause it doesn't really talk about difficulty.

Games are now driven around monetization and mundane tasks to drive engagement, especially those aimed at younger audiences.

you might be. ghosts and goblins is on a tier above the others, which all are legitimate 8-bit monsters themselves

That's because new games do all the thinking for you. Egoraptor did a video about this back in the day with Mega Man X.

I remember that video to this day, one of the best critiques of game design ever made.

It explicitly talks about problem solving vs. that monetization, citing tutorials and even the ways in which we had to get past parts we were stuck. That's 1:1 to what Anoat is talking about with how we were forced to figure out things like the water dungeon on our own.

I have probably spent 5 years in actual hours playing MMOs and I struggle to accept what that kind of exposure has done to my brain.

Well, if you were in a LS / Raid group, you developed interpersonal skills and organizational teamwork.

Including learning to sublimate your own ego for success. If you look at many games today so many players suffer from tunnel vision. They refuse to pick coherent jobs for groups, compositions, etc. because of their individualism.

You probably also learned delayed gratification from FFXI (something else the article also mentions in terms of rewarding mastery and the reward of overcoming constant failure)
