I really am not trying to be a contrarian. I genuinely felt betrayed by the direction the story took. I fucking can’t stand that trope. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I just don’t feel like any of the side content can bring me back to a pre-Act III world.

Is it? I know I got one achievement for having one soldier survive the entire campaign. Maybe it’s a different one.

I recall either not letting any soldiers die or not letting a specific soldier get hurt at all, and tutorial losses and hits count against you.

Yeah this bothered me in BG3; really was expecting six.

Very much was expecting being able to use the usual setup of Tank, DEX DPS, STR DPS, Magic DPS, Support, Healer.

Maybe it's also ingrained in me from FFXI.

I remember the very first time I ever saw the mechanic of back-up party members joining the battle was in Dragon Warrior IV on the NES. Anywhere you had access to the caravan, your unused teammates would jump out and try to finish the battle if your main party wiped. I discovered this for the first time against the very last boss in the game, after I hadn't bothered to level up or equip any but the 4 characters I used the most. Necrosaro ate my whole squad that day.

I prefer fights where your entire party has to get involved beyond the limits of the total party.

It could be like how FFVII did three groups fight different phases, or FFVIIR had Cloud rotating through different partners in the final battle, or Octopath having the entire party of eight fight the superboss.

I'm almost to the World of Ruin now, just getting Strago and Relm up to speed with Espers.

I think any time I’ve played 6 i end up hilariously overgrinding everyone (9999hp, all esper abilities leveled), maybe i should try a more minimalist run

If I remember correctly it's possible to beat the game as soon as you get Setzer in the World of Ruin, you can skip every other story and just fly straight to Kefka's tower.

Technically possible yes, but obscenely difficult since you'd have to make it through the tower with just the 4 party members split 3 ways.

I wouldn’t recommend it though you might get tilted by missing valuable side content and lore and start ranting about how it’s bullshit how this won 1994 GOTY
