Read some quotes from Paul Verhoeven about Total Recall and he says the film was made deliberately to leave it ambiguous and up to the audience to determine if everything was real or a false recall memory dream Quaid experienced, but he personally believed it was a dream. I’ve always been on the side that it was real because there are several scenes shown to the audience that don’t feature Quaid at all, and if it were his dream, it wouldn’t make sense for them to be included.
