The top end of AAA gaming is a bit of a shit show right now, but the sheer depth and quality of games available is overwhelming.
Stuff like Dead Cells, Celeste, Disco Elysium, Hollow Knight, etc etc that you can find for 10 bucks or less

maybe i should read the bible from start to finish again. haven’t done it since grad school
im not having a crisis or anything i just keep forgetting references and it’s fucking up my jeopardy game
Just play Xenogears again
honestly it's not even close and people i think are blinded by nostalgia
indie gaming, online gaming, the breadth and diversity of published options, (until recently) the comparative cheapness of the hobby, continual post-release support, massive advances in technology that make new games/experiences possible.
like yes Super Metroid ruled but it was the single Metroid title between 1991 and 2002, these days you get a dozen Metroidvanias of quality in that timeframe, and most for far cheaper
I’m constantly having to block gooner and porn content on my socials and I feel like such a liar having to choose “This doesn’t match my interests” as the reason because it definitely do
That is one of the issues.
Basically the biggest releases in the past 10 years have been: Tree of Savior, Albion Online, Lost Ark, New World, and Throne & Liberty.
There are some smaller attempts, but even those big ones didn't do so hot.
Some of it may be tied into something I read last week.

scrolling through channels and landed on card sharks randomly
question asked: out of 100 policemen surveyed, how many have had to use their billy club on someone
me: well this is ridiculous, surely the number is small
contestant 1: i saw the police break up a fight once, and they settled it without the billy club. i think the number is low because that’s more of a last resort. ill say 40
contestant 2: oh i think that’s too high. i think that seems very violent. i think the number is definitely lower
me: yes these are reasonable takes. i agree the number is probably lower
host: ok so the answer is 92
makes u wonder how those 8 are moving
MMOs suck but WoW and XIV and TOR and ESO and all their accumulated content is still there
the market has moved beyond them to a degree but i'm not sure the average bro rolling through them is getting that much worse an experience than they woulda 10 or 20 years ago (all due respect to you and the 13 others who miss XI's golden age)
MMOs kind of suck in general nowadays when the first 50-75+ hours of gameplay is just you trying to catch up to your friends.
To be fair, you had other concerns/demands on your time.
New World is the only "Were you under a rock?" one, as it was Amazon's attempt at an MMO. (It's shutting down January next year).
Tree of Savior is a Ragnarok Online spiritual successor.
Albion Online is an Ultima Online/Eve Online/Hard PvP fuckfest.
Lost Ark is a Diablike MMO (also, it actually doesn't count, it's Korean release was over a decade ago, it just didn't come west until 2022)
Throne and Liberty is basically Lineage 3
