Could be as simple as whatever conditions made turtles evolve a fused shell didn't exist in the Mushroom Kingdom, seems like a much straighter line than that they developed beaks, digits, scales, and stationary eyes.

Bruh youre saying they're more like turtles cause they have beaks and digits when many animals across the tree of life share that. They have less unique features associated with tortoises than they do that separate, the most important being their spine situation.

Avians and reptiles evolved from dinosaurs, that doesn't mean they're closely related. I find it more credible they evolved digits and a beak after the fact, than them evolving a defused spine.

Also the creators say they're turtles yes. And if you're taking any of this super seriously then you're as retarded as the crackers above

So convergent evolution only works when you want to use it to dismiss multiple similar features, but not living in a shell.
