At least its not Sticker Star, but I feel Companions aren't going to work like 1/2, they look more like temporary gimmicks according to that video. Either way, a bit more optimistic than before.
anyone else completely turned off by the idea of the spinning board for combat?

The game so far is about what I expected, disappointing and a bit boring, but a well made game all the same.
The humor and charm never carried Paper Mario for me, it was an exceptional bonus, but I needed the gameplay to keep me moving forward and the gameplay was just... simple but fun, like most RPGs, it was never anything special but I liked the Badges, the Leveling, the Partners(and powering them up). The fact partners acted a LOT like Metroidvania type elements, unlocking new areas and secrets previous blocked... same for Boots/Hammers. Partners also added a bunch of personality to the story, with their occasional quips and dialogue during parts of the game and story. Its not all gone, but it is another "All RPG elements removed" Paper Mario. Combat is 100% Pointless, it only rewards you Coins and Paper which can be found in excessive abundance (at least early on), within about 20 minutes into the game you'll already be sitting on 5k+ Coins, its like a mobile game in terms of raining useless currency on you.
To reiterate, its not a BAD game, its just not a game for ME, and if you're one of those people who want Paper Mario/TYD style back this game won't be for you either.
Edit: I'd definitely rate it higher than Sticker Star, but still well below TTYD, although its pretty unfair to compare them because they're not even the same genre of game at this point.
