Police in Iowa City used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse a large group of peaceful protesters during a late-night confrontation Wednesday that swiftly descended into chaos as hundreds fled from the noxious clouds.

The unexpected clash was documented in videos shared on social media, prompting many to denounce the tactics used by the police against protesters who had been chanting, “Don’t shoot,” moments before the gas and stun grenades were deployed.

“It was really messed up because I feel like the only time you should be able to use tear gas, flash-bangs, all that, is when there’s a riot going on,” Tina Deng, a University of Iowa student who participated in the protest, told the Daily Iowan. “But it wasn’t a riot, it was a peaceful protest. And they tear-gassed everyone who was standing there peacefully with their hands up saying, ‘Don’t shoot.’ ”

The Iowa City Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post.

The protesters were part of a march that started on the University of Iowa’s campus about 6 p.m. local time, according to the Daily Iowan. They were met with little conflict as they marched through the city’s streets for hours, making stops at the Johnson County Court House as well as the county sheriff’s office and jail, KCRG reported. But that all changed when they reached a roadway near Interstate 80.

Dozens of police officers had formed a wall blocking access to the highway, according to the news station.

In videos, the protesters linked arms and slowly advanced toward the officers, shouting, “Black lives matter.” They stopped before they reached the police, and many chanted with their arms raised. Suddenly, loud bangs rang out, and clouds of white smoke filled the air. People in the crowd screamed as they ran.

Troy University announced the suspension of its police chief, who said in a now-deleted Facebook post that George Floyd caused his own in death.

Chancellor Jack Hawkins said an internal investigation is underway into university Police Chief John McCall.

A university alumna posted images of McCall’s comments in which he questioned the outrage after Floyd’s death and blamed antifa and opportunists trying to blame President Trump.

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was captured on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck, made a mistake, McCall said in his post.

“Was he intentionally trying to kill Floyd? I don’t think so,” McCall wrote. “Did George Floyd play any role in his own death? ABSOLUTELY!”

McCall insisted that Floyd should have complied with officers during his arrest and saved his fight for the courtroom.

Hawkins denounced McCall’s statements and rejected the notion that Floyd caused his own death.

“We support the calls for reform and an end to police violence that disproportionately targets our black citizens,” Hawkins said.
