I think you misunderstood.

The police don't help the poor. That's my problem.

I think where I sit is I'm worried disbanding all police means those with legitimate mental instability that leads to crime have no means of control and people could get hurt.

I'm 100% with you on disproportionate fucking over of the poor. When I thought about what the police do, the answer for most things (except major crimes) was "absolutely nothing".

Every experience I ever had with the police amounted to "ah well that's a waste of our resources". Well, what the fuck do you do otherwise?

Is there no way to have "less police", much like suggested earlier where police come from their own communities?

You needn't be disappointed. I'm trying to figure this out.

Part of the redirection of funds from the current system should, ideally, go to fund more local psychiatric care facilities. Affordable medication is much more effective as a means of crime prevention than a racist with a gun.

Having the police from your communities doesn't mean we reduce the police force as they are now. The police, right now, are improperly trained and the entire infrastructure and philosophy needs to be destroyed and rebuilt. Not all at once, but slowly. There are people in every community who want to do good and want to protect their neighbors. Not every kid is a "thug" that is going to grow up to rape and murder (despite but the right wants you to believe).

The "police" force will easily be repopulated once the infrastructure is reshaped and funds are distributed not solely to the militarized occupying army, but to proper treatment, rehabilitation, and counseling facilities.

Skim back a page or two and re-read. I don't think anyone reasonable is really hoping for the "peace and love will solve EVERY problem" angle. There should still be trained specialists that can be activated when needed. You don't take a hatchet to your toe because you have a splinter, you use a pair of tweezers.

The problem is that all this brutality is taking place during traffic stops, routine questioning, in the arrest of a misdemeanor offense, etc. It's not like we're out protesting guys getting roughed up after being pulled off of their wife's bloody corpse. It's the rank-and-file cops that need to go. They're not serving an irreplaceable role in the community.

Thanks, I'll do that. I'll also take some time to research more about this idea. Not only is it vital to my practice but I have my previously stated disdain for how the police handle mental health.

This is not directly related to George Floyd but we are currently discussing the role of the police and the handling of criminal elements in a society with and without police. People say, "what are you going to do if somebody breaks in and steals your TV? Call a mediator? LOL GOTTEM"

But maybe we should look at threads like this. Maybe instead of tearing into each other over the imagined theft of a $400 item we can take this time to reflect on how we arrived, as a society, at a place where there are no repercussions for killing a suspected thief that is running from the cops, and what that says about how we value different types of crimes and different qualities of lives.

also the whole abolish the police department is just a drastic measure of reform, a societal/budgetal reorientation away from law enforcement to other forms of outreach, no one is actually calling for the abolition of policing yes
