Big truth. There's a million things that could be done that keep police employed, keep people safe, and transition more into healthcare, education, mental health, etc.

Gotta love that 3% at 55 for public safety (fire typically gets the same treatment). My dad started so long ago, when he retired in 2009, he was one of the few remaining people on Tier 1, so it was specifically just his last year. He purposely made sure he was working overnight for the 5% kick back for alternative shift. Last 3 months, he was only working 2 days a week because he had so much sick leave to burn, he was beyond the cash out cap.

My dad was Tier 1 too, I just missed it but I'm Tier 2 at least.

You forget that they are fully vested in 20 years. So once they hit 20 years, they "Retire" then go a county over and start working there for the same pay + retirement. Then they go for another 20 years to get vested in two different places.

Yeah I definitely didn't forget but a lot of people don't realize that. They retire full pension benefits and whatever package and work security or another civil service job and double dip.

They're goal isn't to eliminate the police there from what I understand. They're dismantling to rebuild, not eliminate.

That's what I heard it was as well. Basically dismantle the police force, retrain and rebuild removing those who cannot adhere to more stringent policies.

If no one is responding to calls, what kind of power would the unions have? The main power play they have is to pull them from doing work... if they are already not performing their job, that takes away the union's power.

Edit: I'm sure there is other things they can do, but I'm not educated enough on the power of the unions to know.

Probably shift them to desk duty only where they still get paid and still get time toward their pension. I'm also not an expert.

actually dang it's Clarence Thomas calling for review. as long as none of the liberal Justices defect off we go, to at least a less expansive form of qualified immunity.

We'll see if they actually decide to take up any of those cases or not. It's interesting that the concept is court-created though, not from legislation.

yee i know Roberts hates judicial activism (or at least the appearance of it) but he's rather plugged in politically and i don't see the Court allowing such a pressing issue to remain untouched given their predecessors are the cause of it. but perhaps the votes simply aren't there among the liberal bloc.
