I'll play little devils advocate and say that, the fear of being sued in our current American climate is a pretty huge concern honestly. Especially for anyone in public sector service like a cop, doctor, EMT and what not. People are fucking sue happy as shit in this country and our legal system makes it a nightmare.

Qualified immunity made sense to me at one point. Due to the sue happy nature like you mentioned, there's gotta be some sort of protection for legit actions. It's clear it's been abused for a long time though.

Honest question concerning qualified immunity, does it apply to other public service positions like firefighters, EMT, etc, or is it only the police that it really applies to? Does it just come up with the police due to their tendency to escalate situations? Reminds me of that story of when the cops demolished a families house and didn't compensate them beyond paying for a hotel and food to the tune of $5,000.

I got sued by someone because I determined that her complaint about racial discrimination to be merit-less and dismissed her case (her rent was raised because her boyfriend started living with her, so the leasing office raised the utilities to account for two people using trash and water, as well as the fact her lease was up so rent was being raised for the next year generally)

She tried to claim damages of 20 million against me for violation of her civil rights.

She kept adding every single person at any government department that she even spoke to but wouldn't help her.

We got the case kicked back to her five times for improper service processing before my boss said to stop playing with the food. Then we got a dismissal with prejudice because we were literally immune from suits for job-related discretionary decisions we make as government employees.

They didn't have a lawyer of course, so her boyfriend was trying to figure out how to do the lawsuit. Then I reported him to the police for improper practice of law.

Basically, no. EMTs/firefighters get some protections as medical personnel but that's pretty much the extent of it. They can still be sued for negligence, wrong doing, intent to cause harm, inaction etc.

Police are basically protected against almost everything most notably for violating your constitutional and civil rights. You have to prove they had intent to and knew they were violating said rights during the act in order to even have a case and the language is so specific it's nearly impossible to sue. Couple that with their union backing at worst they get is paid leave during the investigation.

The Seattle Police Department and attached court system are beyond reform. We do not request reform, we demand abolition. We demand that the Seattle Council and the Mayor defund and abolish the Seattle Police Department and the attached Criminal Justice Apparatus. This means 100% of funding, including existing pensions for Seattle Police. At an equal level of priority we also demand that the city disallow the operations of ICE in the city of Seattle.

There's a few demands I could see working with some tinkering, but yeah, that whole including ripping away pensions that are already being paid, bitch even if the state wanted to do that, those pensions are federally protected. The supreme court would put an end to that fuckery with a quickness.
