The only ones at this point that can reliably calm down the protests within their cities are the lawmakers and police chiefs & police union that have the power to enact actual change to policing standards and punishment for failure to follow those standards. Either that or things peter out come Monday when most people go back to work, the ones that are lucky enough to still be employed at least. The problem right now, and it doesn't seem it's likely to change, is that those that can enact change still remain more concerned with the protests and not the why of the protests. All we''re hearing from police and politicians right now is to go home and chill.
I read your whole post Zealot, very well written (for what my opinion is worth). I just struggle to understand what the end looks like. There’s no leader of the protests as a whole, so who is there to articulate what the change is? And as you have seen with various officials, a lot of them stop listening when the riots are going on. There are other things, but it’s been a long night.
My heart bleeds.
Pittsburgh being the nearest big, big city to me, I haven't heard a whole lot of crazy when local news has been on. Though cursory googling is telling me there has been some violence here and there. I don't really expect any protests in my immediate vicinity because we're vast majority white and I know the fucking racism is real so folks will either be apathetic or on the cops' side.
Still, it's unfortunate how many of these protests seem to be going fine until the cops roll in and decide they wanna forcibly disperse the crowds. The looting/vandalism has otherwise been an effective red herring, the point you can't help but wonder it's not deliberate obfuscation. And of course, you're not going to have any well-meaning politician just be like, "Fuck it, burn it all down!" That'd be as good as suicide even if public opinion is largely with them. As for the question of what we should do, well, it's not something that can be answered in a few quick sentences and there are definitely wiser minds out there for the task. Nonetheless, it is a cumulative sum of social, economic, and political issues. "Back to normal!" isn't an option, which isn't far removed from political stance once Trump is hopefully ousted... be it by the process or the rage of the people.
