Shortly after President Trump vowed to deploy active-duty forces domestically Monday evening, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), a Marine veteran, implored members of the military to “lay down your arms” if ordered to confront protesters.

In a Twitter thread, Moulton, a former Democratic presidential candidate, joined other Democrats in likening Trump’s threat to the behavior of a “tyrant" and called on the armed forces to “Be on the right side of history.”

“We must therefore, with every ounce of conviction, every commitment to peace, and every glimmer of hope, join in lawful protest to overcome his tyranny,” Moulton tweeted, referring to Trump. “And if he chooses to abuse the military as a tyrant would do — to stifle dissent, suppress freedom, & cement inequality — then I call on all our proud young men & women in uniform, as a veteran & a patriot, to lay down your arms, uphold your oath, & join this new march for freedom.”

Moulton joined the Marine Corps in 2001 just days after graduating from Harvard. He served four tours in Iraq and was awarded a Bronze Star.
