A tense standoff between police and protesters in Indianapolis after curfew Monday was defused when demonstrators and several officers agreed to march together toward downtown.

Hundreds of protesters and police faced off near the governor’s mansion after officers told protesters they had overstayed the 8 p.m. curfew and needed to disperse, according to videos shared on social media of the scene. The demonstrators remained, at times kneeling and sitting. Amid the escalating tension between the groups, officers at one point shot a pepper-spray projectile at the crowd, which shouted back asking for peace.

After a while, the protesters appeared to be negotiating with the officers. Several protesters went up to officers to shake their hands. Then, the crowd and officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department proceeded to walk toward downtown. Some officers hugged and linked arms with the demonstrators. “We were so proud to see officers and protesters march together in solidarity,” Indianapolis Police tweeted after the protest. “Our officers will continue to ensure the safety of demonstrators as they walk back to their cars to travel home. Our thanks to the protesters for peacefully advocating for change.”

However, others in the Black Lives Matters movement regarded the de-escalation as an affront to the message of the protest about police brutality. “IMPD staged a media moment near the Governor’s mansion, hugging and high-fiving protesters to create a distraction while they let off rubber bullets and tear gas blocks away w no media present,” Black Lives Matter Indianapolis later tweeted.

“Making this real clear. We don’t shake hands with the enemy,” the group added.

No this is not a twisted joke. After watching what went on over the weekend (and is still going on) I feel like a lot of people have The Joker's attitude now. I'm sure most people here have seen the movie and know what I mean so I don't have to explain. After decades of police brutality and seeing incidents like these in the media over and over again they don't care anymore. They just want to watch the world burn. I think it's a almost perfect comparison to what's going on now.

Because here's the thing. Black people have been "peacefully protesting" for fucking DECADES NOW. Colin fucking Kaepernick protested on national television and racist chuds like you would say, "me no likely when black sports man speak out!"

Peaceful protest has done NOTHING. And when black citizens are dying on a weekly basis from the fucking POLICE, what else is gonna happen? The civil rights movement in the 60's only picked up because of riots and violence. If you haven't studied the history of civil rights your opinion is unwanted. If you want a start, go ahead and read MLK's "Letter from Birmingham Jail."

Target is going to be fine. They will file an insurance claim and get fully reimbursed. George Floyd's life is gone forever. The fact that some of you give more of a shit about Target than you do about the lives of the rioters speaks volumes about your character.

Vandalism and looting gets shit done. If that triggers you, then maybe you should help create a situation where maybe thousands of citizens don't feel like they HAVE to vandalize and loot to get people to notice them.

Their excuse is always the same, THEY HAVE INSURANCE. Yet I've quoted multiple black business owners that had their places burned down, people assaulted and even killed. Yet nobody discuses those, only target, which btw they still employ people who they will probably lay off to offset losses and after a pandemic.

What about the video of the people on the overpass with nowhere to go and getting gassed? You can find a single video or a few videos to backup whatever the fuck you wanna say.

You have peaceful protesting going on and then those same people get teargassed because the president wants to walk over and hold a bible for a photo OP...that in turn leads to SOME people getting fucking furious and looting/rioting over it.

No we fucking aren't lol, read the damn posts instead of having your head up your ass. We are saying we get where all of this is coming from, the writing was on the wall for all of this and it keeps escalating. The cops are shooting shit at peaceful protestors and news media and tackling people who are not doing ANYTHING..which in turn ramps up other people. Then you have people coming from out of town just to score some shit and cause havoc. Don't lump them all into the same groups.
