I did, I gave him some words of encouragement and acknowledged that his position is hard (because I've been there.) I still don't agree that it means Americans are enslaved somehow, especially given how many resources are out there right now.

People are literally not engaging because you have people like Sath or just now, Bryth, go against you simply because you don't share their opinion. It doesn't lead to healthy discussion in any form. Your lack of empathy comes off as "Why don't they just eat at home to save money?" when it never occurred to you some people do not have a stove, microwave, fridge, cookware, etc. Not everyone can just cook at home. Not everyone can just drive to work. Not everyone can just wash their own clothes. Not everyone can waste time posting in the internet for fun. Not everyone has it as good as you do, no matter how hard you actually did or did not work to get where you are. When people talk about 'privileged' that is what they mean. You have had it so good you didn't even consider it could get that bad, or if you did it must somehow be their fault.

Dismissing the unfortunate as a loss of the system makes you hard to agree with, on any level. You seem to care so much for authority figures, but also care so little for your fellow man. Your dismissive attitude makes it easy to dismiss you right back. /shrug

You can understand why things happen without approving. You can have empathy without sympathy.

I am appalled at what's happening. I feel like I'm literally taking psychic damage watching the state of the country.

But I'm not the least bit surprised or confused. If anything I'll be more surprised if things actually persist and make change. Because the goal of authority in this case and all like it is to tamp it down and put the lid back on until it boils over again.

The ugliness is easier to accept when all the violence, murder, and robbery is spread out rather than all happening at once.

I'm not sure how you came up with all that, simply because I disagreed with him saying Americans are enslaved. Sure there are people down on their luck or, for various reasons, have it hard. I can only empathize with them and give them some encouraging words. Life is unfair and I know that very well, but to say Americans are slaves is reaching imo.

The hopeful part with this is that Obama made changes pretty late into his 2nd term. So, if we get Biden in and he makes changes within his first year, that will give us another 3 for lasting change. Then if he gets in again, that's another 4 years. We all know this is going to be a huge fucking talking point come the debates.

I'm not sure if you are trying to be difficult, or are too dense to appreciate that people are sometimes trapped by their life experiences. I don't mean black people, I mean anyone. So, instead of the word 'trapped' let's exaggerate a bit and say 'enslaved'. Forced to keep working to survive, with no real hope of improvement or betterment. Sound about right?

For your second point, no shit. Obviously not every cop in the country is a bad apple. However, people are outraged just how many of them are worthless pieces of shit, and how many 'good' officers either choose to do nothing, or are forced to stand by due to peer pressure, fear, unions, policy, etc. There has been a systemic problem with the police in many places for a very long time. This was just the straw that broke the camel's back.
