It's not so simple and obvious when you realize that many positions that have power over police oversight are elected positions and are often encumbants running unopposed for many reasons, some of which are reasonable and some aren't. There's also the enormous and robust defense system that police unions have established over the last decade that makes it hard to follow-through on any actions taken by oversight committees. MN police union has already stated that they are going to defend Derek and the other officers to the bloody end and if they win they will seek to have them reinstated as police.

There was a thread posted by an elected official in MN (district rep) a few pages ago before the latest round of personal anecdote bullshit happened where the official described the difficulty he had in even suggesting that there not be a sweeping hire of new cops (not even firing them). This included deliberate delays in response times to 911 calls in his district and cops telling business owners that if they wanted better response times or for the cops to actually do their jobs in any way they should take it up with their district representative. Literal extortion tactics by the fucking police themselves.

When police wield an almost unilateral power by preying on people's fears and using those to extort compliance it is clearly not a simple matter to enact reform. When bad behavior such as this is defended without hesitation by a union and a code of brotherhood that only stands to protect themselves, not the populace, it becomes even more difficult.

It might look easy from Canada, but independent of police brutality there is actually a serious crime problem in this country, especially in cities, in every day life. When you don't have the entire country clamoring for reform it is very easy for police to use fear tactics, withholding aid for example, to manipulate pretty much anyone who owns a business or has kids. The curse of being an adult, you have to consider the safety of your family and your livelihood and the police put you in a position to choose whether to press for reform or have the appearance of safety.

I don't know what the answer is besides burn it all down and start again (police), but unless this civil unrest lasts long enough to force change down the throats of all those who stand in the way the "thin blue line" will go right back to controlling their communities through fear and extortion.

The culture of police brotherhood is criminal. Don't be deceived.

Oh man, cnn says all 4 officers had body cameras rolling, and they've (cnn) also seen additional footage, although not all the local video footage that authorities apparently have. I didn't even think they'd have body cams turned on.

Apparently more charges are getting announced soon.

So just out of curiosity, why is there no outrage for David? Why aren't all the news crews except a select few, highlighting his death? He was a black life that mattered and I see nobody championing for him.

First it was "looting and rioting is fine and justified because peaceful protests got nowhere, if you're against it, you just care about property damage"

Then it started with the deaths and it becomes

"Nobody said looting was ok, u just imagined it."

Why can't people be angry and upset with more than one issue? You can actually care about the movement and protests, but condemn this violence that is taking countless more lives and creating new victims every day in every sense of the word. I came in saying the violence was wrong and was met with so much opposition even though I stated I was for the protests and reforms. People are just lashing out at anyone who points the violence aspect out and even OBAMA himself condemned the violence and said this is not the way.
