If they try to charge him with first degree murder he's going to get acquitted on the primary charge and everything that's happened up till now will seem like nothing in comparison.

Like Melena said that cop did not wake up that morning thinking "Holy hell I'm going to go kill George Floyd" - he might have thought that when he was sitting on his neck, but that's hearsay and completely unprovable.

Second degree is the correct charge.

Just remember kids, a huge percentage of police officers are violent criminals.

Doesn't really matter, violent criminals shouldn't be allowed to be police officers, and there's hundreds of thousands of violent criminals policing our neighborhoods today. Police departments don't want to solve this problem and actively resist doing anything about it.

So, I guess I'll ask for clarity since I don't want to assume. Do you think we should address the root causes of this, give them psychiatric help, and allow them to continue being Police Officers if they are able to work through it, pass evals, and still want to Police even after? Or do you think we should just cycle out all effected cops every 6 months "fixing" the problem and creating hundreds of broken Jobless people crippled by stress, paranoia and likely PTSD depending on the severity of the case?

In that regard, how do you feel about Soldiers who come back with PTSD?

Edit: And forgive me for not making it clear - Yah, some of them are probably just shitbags.

No one is born a police officer and once it's found that they can't manage their stress they should be removed. The military is another job that people sign up for that has the same issue but at least it has a higher frequency of removing personnel that are caught abusing their spouses. Make no mistake though, there is a lot of sweeping under the rug as well.

Edit since I saw your reply: Yes they should be given help and counseling because it is the job that contributed to their mental stress. The VA is suppose to do the same for the military but it doesn't always happen.

You can answer the same above questions if you don't mind.

And not directed at either of you two, but I need to make it clear, but I ain't supporting spousal abuse here or excusing it. I'm merely pointing out treating the symptoms by "Firing" these people who COULD very well just be fucked in the head due to the stress of the job they've been giving won't solve any problems and will likely just create a more mentally unstable person. I'm saying yes these people should be put on immediately leave if they're found to abuse a spouse so they aren't out there posing a risk to the community they claim to protect, but I think they should be the psychiatric help they may need rather than a boot to the ass out the door which could just worsen the problem.

You guys can agree there is a mental health problem in this country, the lack of exposing and treating it... right? I thought this was a contention we brought up with School Shootings. If so, you should understand what i'm saying here is maybe theres an underlying problem we could help treat that would lead to less cases of spousal abuse in Police, less REPEAT offenders, while also still being able to punish the ones who are just Dickheads who never belonged in the uniform to begin with?

I don't know why but the statement "No one is born a police officer" is beyond hilarious to me. Now I'm picturing babies coming out of the womb in uniform.

The short answer is maybe. Without comprehensive study to suss out chicken versus egg it's probably safer to assume half and half. I imagine many cops start out normal and over time the stress, lack of sleep, and job hazards wear them down. Seeing people get away with shit because of paperwork, dead kids, beaten spouses, it probably wears them down significantly. The stigma of discussing mental wellness prevents them from getting help. Much like us, the idea of having "temporarily nuts" on the medical record either prevents seeking help or encourages faking an eval with a shrink.

The other "half" is that being in a position of essentially limitless power will inevitably attract the antisocial cops, who join because they were sick of being powerless earlier in life and now dag nabit they're going to show these people how it's done.

Either way, corruption is a drug and power is tantamount to alcohol and not everyone can regulate their shit. Negativity breeds countertransference and without significant change in job routine it's only a matter of time before they snap.

If they got paid better, had more vacation or job satisfaction, who knows if it would be different? The burnt out cops that can't handle their shit could probably change, but the innate personality cops are not fit and likely never will be.

I'll check our medical library to see if there's any research on it.

Police should be provided access to address mental health issues (and most cops have fairly good health plans so that's a big part of the equation) but if a cop commits domestic violence they should be fired and prosecuted. Do I believe a fired cop should have a chance at redemption after paying their debt to society? Sure.

That's the other thing. Zero accountability, zero consequences, and limitless authority, will eventually lead to worse and worse behaviors that test boundaries.

One would imagine this is the real crux of the issue. If regularly dealing with madness on the job was all the excuse you need to justify wanting to do harm, nurses would be killing off all the routine drug addicts they see come in on a daily basis.
