I think these increased charges are a testament to the violence NONE OF US CONDONE, actually have an effect. Kaepernick was kneeling for months, this took a week. While we'd all prefer it didn't happen this way, it did, and is having some kind of effect. The tear gas, pepper praying, beating protesters - it's a bit of insight into what people who have been saying there's corruption for years.

Again, I don't condone it happening the way it did, but i understand why.. and look at its effects

Along that same vein, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump came out saying his show of force on Monday night is what caused the protests to mostly be peaceful Tuesday and that’s why “you gotta be tough.”

I could see that, but anyone with a brain knows it's bullshit and I'm okay knowing that if some systemic issues are getting addressed. His base isn't budging and is waiting to hear that anyway. I'll take whatever small wins we can get

I was looking up the definition for premeditation under the law the other day because of a similar conversation.
It turns out picking up a hammer in order to kill someone is sufficient premeditation for first degree murder. The second the officers were able to stop and think about the fact that they were in the midst of murdering when being told to stop by civilians is enough. Whether the judges, prosecutors or jurors agree (or make the effort to be informed) is another story, but it would be an entirely legitimate first degree murder charge.

Dirk Nowitzki spotted cleaning up Deep Ellum after weekend vandalism

Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki and current Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle were spotted helping to clean up Deep Ellum.

The two were seen sweeping broken glass Tuesday after several businesses across Downtown Dallas and Deep Ellum were vandalized and looted Friday night after a protest was held over the death of George Floyd.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban was also spotted on Sunday marching with peaceful protesters Sunday. He was joined by players Justin Jackson, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber and Jalen Brunson.

1st degree would be too hard to prove in this case and he would likely walk free if they tried him for it. I think 2nd degree may be stretching it personally since you have to prove intent, so they probably should have stuck with 3rd degree which is about as close to a slam dunk as you can hope for here. They must have something else they are confident can prove intent that we may not know about yet.

I think they can prove intent pretty easily given even a politically motivated jury would convict him of it at this point. I can't imagine somehow finding a majority of people that would exonerate him.

There's also a good chance the courts will allow a jury to find on a lesser charge. So there will probably be options, but the caveat is you can't go to an increased charge, like charge with 2nd degree and have the jury find guilty of 1st degree, but it's very much within the realm to be charged with 2nd degree and be found guilty of 3rd or manslaughter.

Both would be disastrous outcomes and probably escalate the situation severely.

That's a great way to have your conviction overturned. In fact, i'd be impressed if any trial related to this is anywhere in or near there due to the potential of a poisoned jury pool.

This, along with providing more leave to deal with things, would both hinge largely on better funding for the police. Many departments don't have the funding to cover higher wages, more vacation, more officers taking leave, willingly or otherwise, etc. I'm certainly not in the know or any police circles, but I wouldn't be surprised if problem officers were evaluated on a financial level, the cost of hiring someone new, paying out the cut officer's retirement/pension, etc.

I don't think funding should ever be part of a discussion like this, but in reality, it'd have to be eventually. It'd likely have to come from increased taxes or federal support, and as a nation, we always seem to buck against the former, and the latter seems to be far rarer then it should be.

Because our nation thinks stress is strength. Life satisfaction makes you more productive and less prone to stress burnout.

Don't get me wrong though, cops protecting each other and racism are also huge contributors to the problem.

Wasn't Floyd and the cop moonlighting at some club as security? Not sure if any sort of relationship could be derived there that could further lead to a harsher sentence. Like, just seeing Floyd was the perp for the forgery could've had his eyes light up at the opportunity to fuck him if there really was some bad blood.
