The reason mobile 3080s have more vram is that it's slower and cheaper memory. It's GDDR6 and only runs through a 256bit bus whereas a 12gb desktop card runs much faster (GDDR6X) and has a 384bit bus.

The extra 4gb won't be making as big of a difference as the increased bandwidth (~913GB/s vs ~448GB/s) on a desktop card, particularly since the game is being measured to use less than 12gb of allocated vram (allocated != used) in most areas. There are also people with 3090 and 3090tis reporting stutters. Would guess 4090 too but haven't seen anyone talking about that and i haven't tried the game again yet since the first version of the demo. the problem likely lies elsewhere.

I have seen people talk about general performance on a 4090, and when I see things like people saying frames drop below 100 into the 60-80 range frequently even on that, it tells me something is very, very wrong.

You can compare it to games like God of War which are more demanding in terms of raster performance yet they perform better overall. If digital foundry hasn't already made a video about this one I hope they do.

I'm basing my VRAM assumption off a desktop 3070 being listed as only capable of 30fps @ 1440p, yet my laptop 3080 (which is slightly weaker overall than a desktop 3060) is generally holding steady at a 60fps cap and averaged 72 in the benchmark on High+DLSS (would sit in the high 40s/low 50s with no DLSS, still bad but way better than the recommended specs suggested)

I'm sure digital foundry will have something cooked up for the PC version eventually, probably just gonna take a few days since SE didn't hand out any review codes for it. Hoping they do some extensive testing on optimal settings cause I've noticed quite a few that really don't do shit. No noticable visual difference from what I saw in High vs Low AO (and Ray-traced AO seeming to only apply to character models and not the environment), but a substantial change in GPU usage

A lot of the difference between mobile 3070 and 3080 is gonna come from the gap in TDP. By and large the 3080s run 20-35 watts higher than the 3070s despite paper specs listing them both at 115.

Overall regardless of the reason for it, I find it very strange that a game looking so last Gen is having performance problems at all.

Edit: nvm I just saw that you wrote desktop 3070. 30fps sounds really low for that. Can believe it though since I'm seeing people say that their 4090s are dipping to lows of ~30 in some cases.

I mean I'd assume the general reason is the Luminous engine is ass.

It handles open world environments and streaming assets for it very well compared to say UE4, and seems to have a great general framework for character animation, but has absolutely dogshit optimization and performance. FFXV is still kinda touch and go if you can't brute force your way through it

Yeah, game looks like shit compared to some modern games (especially hair/fur), which I'm assuming is due to the engine they use. They really should just drop Luminous Engine and move on to something else. Sure, they'll have to pay extra in licensing fees. But at some point you just have to accept the extra cost and balance it against not having to develop their own engine (which costs resources) and having one that's more modern and constantly being improved.

As for the game itself, I've been enjoying it for what it is. Sure, writing isn't the best and voice acting is dogshit, but Forspoken isn't unique in that. Gameplay is still enjoyable.

Started playing the game last night. Getting going and into the open world took longer than it should've, and the game suffers from the same issues that XV did in the sense that it leaves you to figure out how to chain things together on your own. Once you get out into the world to figure some of it out, it's pretty fun. Too many unnecessary cutscenes break up the flow of things by chapter 4. Hopefully that eases up.

Saw a breakdown of the games general performance on DSOgaming and yup why I'm having such comparatively good performance is a VRAM size thing. Cards under 12GB run out of memory even at 1080p.

Just beat the game. This game really isn't that bad. Mfers trying to keep people from buying this game is on some loser shit. It's slow as hell to start off but when it got going I was having a blast. It's a short game and suffers from the same shit every open-world game suffers from but Frey is a cool as hell character when she unlocks all her powers.

This game is giving me anthem vibes. Looks cool and fun to play with the abtiies, but just about everything else is a let down and it brings the whole experience down. That seem about right?

Oof. Anthem comparisons? Ouch, SE. You all have like, 2 divisions that can make a commercially successful game at this point.

    Yeesh.

I never played Anthem so I have no frame of reference to compare it to. Probably about 12 hours of playtime so probably not worth full price but I enjoyed myself.

Tbh imo, unless you play the whole game, you're opinion isn't really valuable and I mean no disrespect. Now if you can't get into it after the first few hours, that's fair but the game keeps giving you new shit up until the end boss.

Story isn't epiphany inducing but most of the shit regarding the main character is explained if you pay attention. If you didn't, you probably don't actually care about the story.

Just saying, thia game don't really deserve the hate unless you're determined to hate the game or you're on PC and game specs are really important for you.

How hard is it? Be honest. Might give this to the wifey to play but if it's like DMC hard that's a no-go. Even FF15 would be a challenge for her lol

Thanks for the insight. I trust your judgment, so it's definitely something I'll get around to playing, but I might wait for it to drop.

No disrespect, but be careful with statements like this. I didn't need to finish FFXIII to know that the story and setting were hot fucking garbage. You don't have to finish a plate of rancid meat to know that it doesn't taste good.

This may not apply with Forspoken, but its a dangerous thing generally to pull the "WATCH THE END CREDITS OR YOUR OPINION IS INVALID!" card.

To give credit to his point, xiii gets drastically better in the 2nd half. Not saying you're wrong in your opinions, but there's merits to what both of you are saying.

I can't personally see spending 70 buckazoids on a 12hr game though, fuck that. Definitely waiting for the $15 Christmas SE sale on this one.
