Well jeez I wanted to see if there was more to it than that and apparently yeah it's pretty racist.

The song was typically performed in blackface.

The original spokeswoman was a former slave hired to go around doing a stereotypical slave performance.

The second spokeswoman was hired because she resembled the mammy character from minstrel shows and they changed the mascot image to look like her.

I don't know what the deal with Uncle Ben is though.

Uncle Ben was based on a Maitre d of some bigwig of the company. The term "uncle" and "aunt" has been used as a derogatory or subservient moniker for blacks. Hence uncle ben, aunt jemima, "uncle tom" etc.

Two white dudes wanted to sell pancake mix in the 1890’s and thought “Hey let’s name the company after a song from a vaudeville show featuring a character dressed in blackface called Aunt Jemima”



A few years later they sold the company cause they were low on cash and the new company used an ex-slave as the company mascot at an expo. At the expo, she was dressed and characterized as a real life mammy slave from the south and her backstory was that she served pancakes made from a secret recipe that was only known to slave women of the south.

Because pancake mix is basically time saving, it was like having your own slave. In fact, a line from 1920s advertisements for Aunt Jemima read: “Make them with Aunt Jemima Pancake Flour, and your family will ask where you got your wonderful southern cook”.

It’s a bad case of using a racial stereotype as a mascot and it ranks up there with Jack Daniels taking credit for creating whiskey that was taught to him by Nathan Green who was a slave.

None of my post was a call to action, it was observational and as per usual you and the other haters decided to jump in and go on the attack.
