See, this right here is what's wrong with America. Just because someone has committed a felony does not mean they should be judged based on that for their entire life, that's how you turn someone into a career criminal.

Prison should be about rehabilitation to prevent them from committing more crimes in the future, give them a chance to start over.

Naturally, there are people who just can't be helped, but those are a minority. Should someone who's smoked marijuana really be judged based on that in court and be a reason to make it OK to kill them or not get a job? Especially when it's starting to get legal in so many places? Should someone who stole a candy bar when they were 20 really be judged based on that 10 years later?

Even if that were true, that's my entire point. If you don't give someone the opportunity to improve, they'll be forced to keep committing crimes in order to feed themselves and/or their family. Backing people into a corner daily forces them to lash out; if someone can't get a job, can't get help through welfare programs, and daily get shunned by society, what are they expected to do? Lay down and die? They still want the necessities of life such as a roof over their head, water, food etc. And if they can't get it through other means — especially for their family — they'll, of course, be forced to commit crimes for it.

As an example, in Sweden, prison is about rehabilitation. The prison is the punishment. Once they get out the punishment is over, and they shouldn't be punished for what they did anymore. Prison is rehabilitation to help turn them into productive members of society, and prison offers them the opportunity to learn useful skills that they can use on the outside.

Sweden has a recidivism rate of about 40%, compared to about 76% in the U.S. The entire prison system in the US is about getting as many people as possible in there so that the owners can make money, US society don't give a fuck what happens to the prisoners once they're out and everyone seem to have an "once a criminal, always a criminal" mindset — regardless of the crime.

I wouldn't ever argue that our Prison systems aren't fucked up. Our Prison systems are indeed fucked up, and could use a huge change. Definitely making "for Profit" prisons 100% illegal would be a welcome start. That said, some people are just assholes, nobody is born an asshole, but after a certain point, "Un-assholing" someone becomes a monumentally improbable task. Don't misunderstand me, I do agree that Prison is a punishment and should be a rehabilitation center where criminals can try to prepare for a new life for themselves, and be given the opportunity to do so when released... with stricter consequences for repeat offenders. George Floyd was arrested 9 times for varying charges, some armed robbery and some theft charges (small ones like 50-500), some drug related (possession/intent to sell).

He didn't deserve to die, but lets not romanticize the circumstances here, he wasn't some poor, kind-hearted man driven to crime as a last resort to survive. At the point of his death, he was a man doing bad things who seems to have long since given up. If we could go back roughly 40 years to his childhood and change some pieces there perhaps you'd have an argument, but by his age the damage was done.

So there is tragedy in his life, he grew up in a fatherless home, with a struggling single mom, in an extremely poor neighboorhood, a recipe for disaster. If we want to stop George Floyd situations we should start there. Fatherless homes, struggling single parents in general mother or father, and poverty, let alone the bad influences those areas bring with it.

Now what may be a more controversial statement, I'm of the mind actions have consequences and people have a responsibility to be held accountable to their actions. There are people out there struggling every single day trying to give themselves, their kids or their family a good life in a shit system who don't turn to drugs, crime, armed robbery, etc. Who just take beating after beating and somehow get by... and sometimes they don't. So, to me, your circumstances, while they can be tragic, aren't an excuse in my eyes.

Any case anyone has the memory of a goldfish and forgot the second 'paragraph', this isn't a justification for his death. As I've said way back in this discussion, George Floyd may have deserved to be in prison, but not dead

Glad all these protests have helped people reflect and fight for justice for the innocent. SO great to see the great reduction in violence. Minneapolis is seeing such low crime it is unprecedented.
