I agree, in that I don't believe deadly force should be used as a precautionary action in basically all situations. Its always a tough call for me, but this is just one of this situations where I have to admit given the scenario allowing him to reach in his car (and possibly jump in in an instant) could have really really soured the situation. At that point their options are either fire into a car with children(which god save me, would have burned the city to the ground), or let him go which would lead to likely a high-speed chase and put those children in huge risk if he gets into an accident, or as I said above even using them as leverage.
Honestly, I don't envy the officers who had to make that choice in this situation, and even though based on what I've read here I don't believe the officers were acting in benevolence here, I do think that stopping him from getting into his vehicle was the lesser of two evils.
Wrong reasons, right choice, if you will.
