is the first case really so clear cut not-self-defense? the guy was chasing the kid down and got hit when basically on top of the kid after he ran him down many yards away from where the chase started (at least on video, who knows where the chase actually began)

As above, this is why life without parole is explicitly stated if charged as such. Otherwise, as Gad said, parole boards come into play and most will be paroled after a few decades.

That's a huge deal given this kid is 17. If he did 30yrs he'd be a little older than I am when he got out and would have plenty of time to have a life outside of prison.

Let's be real. A white 17 year old is not getting murder 1. There's just no way. They may charge him with that, but it ain't happening.

17 is that funky age where some states can basically pick and choose whether they're an adult or juvenile.
