This is because it's not about people hearing or acknowledging your opinion, it's about them agreeing with it.

I mean if you have no intention of challenging him or engaging him it seems like unnecessary stress. I'm not trying to take sides here. I can kinda understand how you must feel here.

Still, I often see even those who try to argue in good faith(presumably, I'm not a mind reader) have to weed through the posts of several agitators to get to a single decent response from someone who still manages to insult them and their intellect with every condescending word. Its not hard to imagine why some of us just don't try anymore or constantly feel like we're being attacked and insulted for having a different opinion when we're constantly attacked and insulted for having a different opinion (Since by the very nature of 2-party politics, our opinions are "stupid"). This isn't one sided either, you guys aren't the only one dishing it out.

Further, some of them deserve it, I'll admit, there are a remarkable number of posts that make me scratch my head or go "Well thats clearly a biased and misleading video", or stuff that just straight makes me cringe, and i watch Louie La Vau sometimes for funsies and that guy goes HAM on these topics. So yes, I get that sometimes it IS justified so I'm not making a blanket statement here saying you guys are always in the wrong. Its a two way street and maybe there are more bad faith actors here than I give them credit for and I just don't know them well enough.

Watching pages after of pages across many threads, of dog piles on people who go against the grain over and over and over on BG, only to be like "Hey fellas this is kinda toxic maybe this is overkill?" then be met by someone who for a brief second wipes the blood off their face and puts the shovel down to say "Nah man we're very opening and inviting here, I'm very open minded to new ideas" and then goes immediately back to curb-stomping the dude who didn't like the same Syrup flavor as them, doesn't exactly paint the picture that I could say what I really want to say in a discussion.

Actions speak louder than words and I tend to keep my mouth closed these days on anything I want to say that I know would be ... uncomfortable. I've made my mistakes in the past, and I'm trying to grow from them.

Regardless, I know when I try to talk from a calmed perspective I can sound like I'm on a high horse, I can't really argue against that so I'm just kinda saying sorry here. Its unintentional I just don't know how else to word it, but I know i sure as shit ain't perfect and am guilty of the very things I outline in this post. Draylo is the catalyst for me bringing this up but I want to clarify I'm not saying this in defense of anyone, this is not a justification for anyones actions or opinions.

As a closing thought, I think its worth pointing out BG has ALWAYS been this way even before we got political and it was just video games, so theres that.

Edit: honestly the only people I can think of off the top of my head as Center/Moderate to very "Right Wing" posters here often fighting against the consensus are Draylo, Guartz, and Day, occasionally me. Funny thoughts come into my head now...

People tried to have a conversation, people tried to explain why they disagree with him, or why they think his entire argument is irrelevant or missing the big picture. He ignores those and either cherry picks certain sentences, or misreads posts, and focuses on whining that people aren't nice to him.

And this is a common theme with a bunch of posters. They bitch and whine that this is an echo chamber, but then get banned because it turns out they were only here to start shit and troll the entire time (Day), or they are crazy pedo racists (blubbs or grooogggle, I always confuse them), or they refuse to actually have a conversation and back up a single claim (guartz). Shit, you had a ton of posts that were clearly trolling (I won't get into specifics because its not the point right now) but you're here now and people have no problem at all responding. Even when Gard was admittedly trolling, people still had conversations with him and tried to explain things.

People don't get shit on for having a good faith conversation. They get disagreed with. They get arguments. But they don't get 50 pages of people telling them to stfu until they push everyone that far.

Yah, again, there are definitely some instances where I see why the conversation went to shit. There kind of has to be a conversation first for it to go to shit though, and that doesn't happen a lot. But, now, I can't really argue much against this without being put in the uncomfortable position of defending someone I don't have the knowledge or experience to defend in terms of if they're acting in good faith, so I'm kind of stuck.

Guess I can go back and see if I can find the tipping point.

For arguments sake, I can go back to the Syrup thing on page 7(Cause it was funny, less serious, but also a prudent example). Draylo came in out of nowhere and simply mentioned that its wild they're changing Aunt J, bringing up that nobodies perfect... and the very first response he got called him a quote "Partisan hack", the next response to him was a mocking image implying the irony of being a snowflake while calling others snowflakes, and then its just general mocking dogpile from multiple people. Admittedly after his third response, Draylo did get a little stand-offish, and from there things got worse and worse.

I mean, you could have just asked why he thought that was a bad thing and maybe change his mind by providing examples of stuff changing in our lifetime. I'd like to think by now he understands that Aunt J and Uncle Ben are both products of extremely racist caricatures of Black People from the 1800's and there is nothing wrong with changing the mascot after more than a hundred years. Theres a reason you don't see thinks like "Pickaninny Freezes" anymore, most of the old, extremelry racist products have either changed or stopped existing altogether.

I think the man is capable of being reasonable when given the chance, but as I stated above, I don't know him well enough to argue with any certainty. I guess what I'm getting at here is perhaps you could try a little harder once in a while without insults and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised? I'm not suggesting infinite chances, but maybe give him like 1 allotment a day or something?

I think the syrup thing was shut down so quick because of his behavior in this thread. Its all the same people talking, so everyone was already over his shit. We've also already had this same conversation a few months back over butter. I'd like to believe he now gets why its good Aunt Jemima is changing, but I really don't think he does.
