what if entrapment was good because it resulted in easier convictions and sometimes the person convicted was a criminal?

I am genuinely conflicted. I am sure that most of the people caught would not be convicted as sex offenders without a such operations probably because they would not commit crimes, but I am also confident that they probably catch sex offenders more often than not. The specific examples in the article are harmless guys that got entrapped, but on a deeper level it is a question of how many adult lives you are willing to sacrifice to prevent child rape.

What is the bias/variance trade-off we want for a model predicting child rape?

Regardless the answer, we probably don't want the model made by politically/financially motivated religious groups, so there is plenty to dislike in the article.

That's not a harmless guy though. He was going to get some 13 year old poon. Trying to paint him as some harmless guy in a bad situation is ridiculous. She told him she was 13. He picked up condoms otw. He's saying he would have left of she was actually 13 because he got caught. In what world would you seriously think "ya, I'm going to go hang out with this 13 year old chick and that's ok," when you're 20 years old, and prep for sex just in case?

When MySpace was still a thing I had two separate instances of girls having their age as 18, then before we were gonna hang out they told me they were 15 and 16 respectively. I noped the fuck out of there and I was only 19 at the time.

It was wrong. He knew it was wrong. He just didn't give a fuck until he got caught.

The problem is underage girls do shit like that and guys like him are there to take advantage if the situation presents itself.

    https://news.yahoo.com/kenosha-polic...023845402.html

The vehicles that were towed belonged to a meals-on-wheels organization from Portland called Riot Kitchen. They serve hot meals to protesters.

Nine people arrested by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for allegedly being outside agitators were in the city to distribute food to protesters, a director of the nonprofit kitchen said Saturday.

Jennifer Scheurle, who serves on the board of directors for Riot Kitchen, based in Seattle, said Kenosha police were mistaken when they arrested the volunteers Wednesday for investigation of disorderly conduct.

The nine were released from jail Friday on about $150 bail each, paid with the help of donations, she said.

The Kenosha Police Department said it focused on three vehicles associated with the group after receiving a tip from a citizen "alerting us to several suspicious vehicles with out-of-state plates."

Officers and U.S. marshals surveilled the black school bus, food truck and minivan and moved in for arrests when the suspects attempted to fill gas cans with fuel at a gas station, the department said.

Those are the "related to criminal activity" vehicles they towed?

Yes. The police chief emphasized that they went after them for having out-of-state plates.

More fun in my hometown: https://www.tallahassee.com/story/ne...sm/5654072002/

Black man and his son are dropping off a U-Haul, elderly white couple who own the strip mall think they are trying to steal stuff and come out blasting guns. Luckily no one was hurt and amazingly, a cop was parked at the strip mall and intervened and arrested the old white folks. Emboldened vigilantism is a real thing now. This might be one of the scariest times in recent memory to be dark skinned.

I mean, maybe. He was a guy who talked to a 27 year old man doing a poor job pretending to be a 13 year old girl while looking at pictures of a 24 year old girl and he called her out on actually being 23 in chat.

Only he knows whether he would have smashed if she had been 13, but at no point in the story did he seek out a 13 year old, show a physical attraction to children, or partake in kiddie porn.

If not baited, he probably wouldn't have ever hit on a kid. Even after having been baited, he hasn't hit on a kid. The crime here was the intent, and that is some pre-crime predictive model policing.

Given that you are locking people up with a predictive model, it is worth considering your bias/variance trade-off. How many false positives (estimated at >90% in the article iirc) are we willing to accept for the true positives?

If it is only a 90% false positive rate and the true positive rate in the general population (sans entrapment) is like 0.01%, that is a pretty good predictive model. Is it good enough?

AFTER she said she was 13 he was talking about bondage and shit with her. Mind you, that's out of what he told them for the article. He said "did you mean 23?" and she obviously said no or didn't correct it.

I get what you're saying, this is just a horrible example.
