The chief federal watchdog for the Secret Service blocked investigations proposed by career staff last year to scrutinize the agency’s handling of the George Floyd protests in Lafayette Square and the spread of the coronavirus in its ranks, according to documents and people with knowledge of his decisions.


Both matters involved decisions by then-President Donald Trump that may have affected actions by the agency.


Joseph Cuffari, the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, rejected his staff’s recommendation to investigate what role the Secret Service played in the forcible clearing of protesters from Lafayette Square on June 1, according to internal documents and two people familiar with his decision, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the discussions.

So Xno, what gubmint do is allocate a shitton of money, a lot more then necessary, to certain branches. Those branches then have to find ways to spend that money, otherwise by the next budget, theyre gonna say "oh, you didnt use all of it, cool were gonna move it elsewhere". Theres never a "wow, you saved us money, thanks" moment. Thats why you wind up with cops with military equipment, because they gotta use up every penny of that budget.

As someone who deals with government budgets, and have been instructed to buy all the IT equipment you think we may possibly need by end of fiscal year to avoid a budget cut, he's not entirely wrong, though this wouldn't fall under standard operational budgets.

Another manager I had went by the motto, buy what you want, then ask for what you need after the budget is spent.

Company I used to work for did IT consulting. We requested money to be put in the budget for server upgrades in 2018, but never got around to it for whatever reason (there was no plan set, just "the hardware is old, it will likely need to be updated in the next couple years"). Instead of moving that allocated money to 2019 budget, it was moved elsewhere and the IT budget was slashed.

Four indicted for torching the Minneapolis 3rd Precinct.

The complaint charges 22-year-old Dylan Robinson, 24-year-old Davon Turner, 26-year-old Bryce Williams and 23-year-old Branden Wolfe with one count each of conspiracy to commit arson.

The indictment accuses Williams, Turner and Robinson of using explosive devices to attempt to start fires in the building. Wolfe allegedly pushed a barrel into a fire at the entrance of the building to accelerate an existing blaze.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Monday that the Justice Department will open a civil investigation of the Louisville Metro Police Department, 13 months after the shooting death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman whose killing was among the flash points that sparked mass social-justice protests across the nation last summer.

Garland said the federal “pattern or practice” probe will seek to determine whether the Louisville police have engaged in systemic abuses and unlawful tactics with little accountability — marking the second time in five days he has sought to use federal power to examine a local law enforcement agency’s use of deadly force. Last week, he said the federal agency would investigate the Minneapolis Police Department after former officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the killing of George Floyd, a Black man, last May.

A federal grand jury indicted three White men on hate-crime and attempted kidnapping charges Wednesday in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man whose fatal shooting last year in coastal Georgia sparked a national outcry.

Travis McMichael, 35; his father, Gregory McMichael, a 65-year-old former police detective; and William “Roddie” Bryan, 51, are already awaiting trial on murder charges, accused of confronting and killing Arbery as he was jogging through the Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick, Ga., in February 2020. The case went months without arrests until a video of the shooting went viral, drawing condemnations and comparisons to a lynching.

The trial for the three remaining officers responsible for George Floyd's death has been delayed from August to March 7, 2022. The presiding judge says the announcement of the federal charges is the reason he moved the date.
