Cops take the no pursuit policy here very seriously. Probably not for any honorable reason, just that they get raked over the coals and (successfully) sued every time they fuck up like this.

Wonder if that's the case up there too. There are cases where pursuit is justified. Just not very many of them.

I was under the assumption that cops don't chase unless the suspect committed a violent crime. I also thought they didn't engage in a high speed chase but will follow the car unless it starts driving dangerously like onto incoming traffic or something, instead they send a helicopter and wait.

Unless things changed since I left, the county sheriff I live in, pursuit's have to continually be monitored and approved by the watch lieutenant or above, and typically only allowed on the high way. If it's bad and they can't pursuit them, they'll work with CHP to get a chopper over them and try to see if they can safely disable the vehicle with spike strips and such.

Seems like the cop giving pursuit was more of a danger to the public than their suspect, I mean crashing into another car and killing an innocent bystander and all.
