The earliest deadline that a lot of states share is 30 days before. Most of the states that allow up to election day registration have populations smaller than Houston.
    Hawaii from that list:
If you have missed the voter registration deadline, you can still register to vote and a cast a ballot at the same time during early voting at early walk-in locations and on Election Day at your polling place. Contact your Local Election Office if you have any questions.
Some of the smaller population red states offer registration after that window, but the ways of going about it are all some extra bullshit.
Then there's north dakota, where it's automatic registration but you can't have a DL you need to vote if you don't have a postal address. Sorry native american reservations!

The Supreme Court on Monday night agreed with South Carolina Republicans and said mail-in ballots must contain a witness’s signature, something federal courts had said should be waived because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The high court made one concession, saying ballots already sent in without a witness should be counted. Tens of thousands of ballots have been sent to voters across the state.

The court’s brief order did not list any objecting justices. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Neil M. Gorsuch said they would have granted the request in full, meaning the ballots already in without a witness signature would not be counted.

If I’m honest, a deadline for voter registration makes sense to me. Just because in general these things are always slow and I could see people getting confused if someone did vote but their registration hadn’t fully gone through yet, or some other ridiculous thing like that

The real problem is the concept of the perpetual need for registration. This shit either needs to be a one-time thing established at birth or something you do at the DMV once you're 18.

Why do you even have to register to vote in the first place? And why do you have separate voting booths for republicans and democrats? Doesn't seem very anonymous and voter-friendly to me.

In Sweden, the government mails a voting card to everyone that is eligible to vote, and then you just go to the voting place, cross who you want to vote for, put it in a sealed envelope, show your photo ID and voting card, they cross your name off of the list to register that you have voted, double-check the name and ID to make sure you haven't voted before/make sure they crossed the right name, and then put your vote into the box.

Day leaves out the part where over half the state governments make it actively harder to acquire your ID

Sweden seems to make that part easier

The Republican machines are actually connected and the Democrat machines have a string and a plastic cup on the other end.

I might have misunderstood the report I read if there isn't, it might have simply been somewhere where a high rate of democrats voted had an 8 hour line to vote, whereas a place that was highly republican had shorter lines, but the report made it sound like it was at the same place with two different lines, so never mind if that's the case.

Depending on state, parties can choose to have an open primary (anyone can choose to cross over and vote in their primary) or closed primary (only party members may vote in the primary).
That leads to a situation where people must have the correct ballot for their affiliation. Also, with the old ink-a-vote devices in CA, they would be set up to only have the democrat or republican race in it's pages, so again, you'd need to go to the proper booth.
This is a functional reason for separate booths.

Also, in CA at least, a voting location would have two books at the table. The roster, which people write their signature in, and the street index, where a poll worker crosses out an entry each time someone signs the roster.
The street index has the name, address, and party affiliation listed for everyone.
There are 3 copies, the master, first, and second. Every hour the first and second are rotated, one on the table, the other at the entrance to the polling place. The one at the entrance is for public perusal.
This is a holdover basically from the past century for local "get people to the polls/have you voted?" stuff.

Basically, in CA anyway, your party affiliation is PUBLIC information. Anybody is free to know it if they care to bother.
How you vote is your own business, but you don't get to pretend you're a member of a different party.
