I'm not even sure if that's good or not. I mean, it coming sooner is good. But I wonder how many years will now be added on top of that. Especially if you remember them saying they don't have much to show yet - but I guess that could have been just then saving juicier stuff for a better event

I would say, a lot of people know how Yoshi-P communicates things. In fact, this trailer screams BD3 Promotion team in the form of structure. Yoshi likes to hide things and leave red herrings. I think there is a clear PR schedule for this already lined out, a holiday 2021 would be surprising, but not out of the line of possibility. If I had to decode everything, I would put money on between March and May 2022.

I think everything really hinges on where Nomura is on FF7R2. I have a feeling SE would rather that release between the two, but the fact that we haven't seen anything yet concerns me. I kind of feel if we don't get FF7R2 PR by Game Awards that puts FF16 releasing first, and most likely Holiday 2021.

"In Development" has meant jack at SE since Versus. We will see.

2022 isn't unreasonable, if it indeed has been at even 50% of normal development speed compared to SE's other groups. It would likely mean hardware development, and not just art/story/direction pre-dates PS5 dev kits by a good amount and had to be shifted at some point. I'm leaning more towards just art/planning has been development since 2016 in a sense that it didn't interfere with Shadowbringer and has only gotten really into the weeds for maybe 2 years with PS5 dev kits.

That said, if SE can return to AAA development on a 3-4 year cycle good for them. About damn time. I just don't see a company of that size shifting the way they've done things so quickly even with a "rogue" group like Yoshi-P's at the helm.

The one thing they have going for them so far from all of what we've seen is that they're relatively insulated from anything involving Nomura's group. The FFXV DLC cancellation is now looming large as when FFXVI probably truly entered into real development.

Nothing Yoshi-P puts his hands compares to the clusterfuck that is Nomura. Yoshi gets his shit out on time, and if he isn't going to, he'll let everyone know in public.

He's the guy that gave us Abyssea and Voidwatch, while Voidwatch is a mixed bag, Abyssea was a pretty big hit and breathed new life into a dying game. Even if it soured some bitches who exploited linkshells to get relic weapons and felt invalidated in their expoitation lol.

Outside of a strict survival game, sports, racing, or something like Death Stranding where your biggest antagonist is the ground you walk on, everything involves some degree of power fantasy. Just because you have a group doesn't mean it makes sense to down a 50' dragon with swords and fire.

Course, the trailer also had someone being murdered right in front of a kid while his face got covered in blood. So there is probably some level of what to expect.
