It's a great game! But a lot of things are lacking and it definitely has its flaws. Side quests being one of them. Fwiw, the side quests with the + symbol reward a new item or ability, the ! are just run of the mill quests. And boy oh boy will you be running around slaying this here, that there, etc.

The music and cutscenes slap so fucking hard tho

This has been happening to me lately in other games when it was never a problem before. So odd

The modders'll fix it now. If SE didn't want waifu and stupid Thomas the Train Engine superboss fights being modded into the game, they should have sold enough PS5 copies to keep it off the PC. They failed, and so here we are. Let the floodgates open!

spoilers here kinda just doing it because its new on pc:

    Spoiler: show
story: pretty good, graphics: pretty good, gameplay: eh? it's real bland. also really easy.

quick question as I'm not that far in (I think) does it ever actually open up or is this useless open area followed by streamlined fighting area thing just rinse repeated through the whole game?

It kinda follows a pattern of STORY—>pause where you can do sidequests and hunts and explore/upgrade equipment—>STORY—>repeat

The gameplay loop is more "baby's first DMC" than an actual RPG, with MMO style quests as side content.

As far as challenge goes I was never really challenged by the story content, but some of the S tier hunts can be fun and challenging if you attempt them at lower than recommended levels.

Not having much of a challenge was kind of…I dunno the best way to describe it, but felt appropriate to me thematically? Especially the more powers you get as you progress. It’s just a very cinematic power fantasy and had me all like I AM A GOD TREMBLE BEFORE MEEEEEE stuff.

the lack of difficulty and locking hard mode behind NG+ was the worst part of the game for me. literally not figuratively did not die once + never had to engage with any of the systems on a meaningful level. became a matter of braindead cruising through the combat to get to the story. fine game still, it was a good story and even braindead cruising is enjoyable on a shallow level when the combat is flashy and punchy, but p shit and artifically limiting they said if u want a challenge play the game twice bozos.

this must be how people who can't stomach soulsborne difficulty feel but in the inverse

    Such an apt description tbh

Game is linear/open world in the way ff7 reborn was is open world but still linear with most of that open world being meh. Not bad but not exactly stellar either.

I just want secret areas with fun items and stuff. FF15 is a better game to me so far. The music and story are fucking dope though. Feels like playing in an old school FMV sometimes.

I now understand why you guys complain about the sidequests. After an epic eikon battle asshole made me carry logs from a to b lol. I came to realize that a well designed hunt system is the best kind of sidequest, XII, XIII, XV all did it well hoping the same for XVI. So far I haven't seen the game over screen once, but I like to simply enjoy the story. Hunts/optional bosses are where the challenge lies.

One thing I absolutely love about this game is that lead characters are actually mature, 30-40 year old people. Even in my early 20s I could relate myself more with Balthier/Basch type of characters with some experience in life, rather than the teenagers so this is a huge plus of the storyline.

Yea, the sidequests are very MMO-esque. While they do provide some lore on occasion, it's just busy work the way it plays out. Sidequests historically were never like that in older FFs. All the sidequests usually were just randomly doing shit and getting rewarded for it, a sidequest spanning the whole game that has you collecting rare things with the genesis of the quest being some NPC saying "Yea, there's some rare shit out there, would be cool if someone could find it", or taking a side path that led to a hidden boss/harder than usual dungeon. That's probably my biggest dislike with FFXVI as it felt like it took the sense of adventure away by neatly giving you an objective.

I distinctly remember how cool it was in FFXII when I ended up in the Necrohol of Nabudis the first time without even knowing that's where I was going all cause I decided to make a left instead of a right.

I mean, quest structure ultimately has its limitations and the only why you can spice it up is with related story/combat. In general, I think the best thing any game can do is actually have quests be clearable before you flag them, so an NPC can be like, "Oh no, I lost my umbrella on Bullshit Mountain!" and you can just be like, "Ah, you mean this one?" and voila. Instead, a lot of the time the umbrella won't even appear until you know the NPC wants it. It's just a subtle nod toward exploration while potentially eliminating that feel of chores.

Idk if you're far enough yet, but this game has a hunt system too. Very very basic and not really challenging, and many of the enemies are just reskins, but I enjoyed them well enough and definitely more than the usual side quests in that game.

Agreed on many points. There’s a lot to enjoy about this game, but I’m at the rising tides DLC and slogging through until the end.

It just feels too much like 14 to me: Enjoyable, but plays it too safe and feels like it’s lacking..substance?

I'm enjoying the game at around like 13-14 hours in but that they actually managed to make it even shallower than 15 is an epic achievement.

I'll enjoy it a lot more when I download a mod that allows me to fight with a larger party of Clive's original prequel boys as a house guard at all time (save for bosses), against about triple the enemies.
