This is how the claims went:

Depp won on all of his claims, $10mil was compensatory damages and $5mil was punitive damages.

Amber Heard won on 1 claim and it was $2mil in compensatory damages.

Punitive damages in Virginia are capped at $350,000. So $10,000,000 + $350,000 - $2,000,000 = $8.35mil.

I can agree, kinda, but I do think this societal bias can work both ways, and sometimes it has unfortunate outcomes. With just a pile of unproven anecdotal stories, public sentiment seemed to be overwhelmingly on Ambers side around the time of the article this case is about, I seem to recall JD getting shitcanned and blacklisted from all his roles upcoming and current, simply from the accusation before any trials. Because the accusations were severe, and disgusting, of course no one would want to be tied to that. I mean sure you still had some people on JDs side, the same Anti-MeToo warriors or just Pirates fans who didnt want to believe it, but (as was shown in the Trial btw) public sentiment in favor of JD didn't really peak until much later, at least on Twitter(#), where apparently we gather all this knowledge from now... She was the one getting TV spots and interviews about winning the 3mil and "Donating it" (Read: She didnt donate it).

Like dang, I guess this is a good example on how having all the same information can lead people to two completely different conclusions. I may not come to the same outcome as you but I still find it interesting that we both watched the same like.. 20~ Hours of Trial footage and arrived at different sides of the spectrum. Not saying this is negative to you or anything.

i do think the knee jerk reaction was to believe her claims uncritically initially, especially among the media elite, but at no point did we see the extent of outrage against Depp for his alleged crimes as we've seen against Heard for hers. the amount of vitriol and misinformation targeting her is an order of magnitude worse than anything Depp had to experience from the public.

to wit, there is a massive biased narrative being built around the case that is overwhelmingly in his favor. eg it's become totally normalized to state Depp lost all his movie roles because of Heard's accusations, which were all immediately taken at face value. but in fact he maintained his Harry Potter role after the allegations (even receiving a public statement of support from JK Rowling) until after he had lost his libel suit in British court where the abuse was established in their justice system. again, a court's ruling does not inerrantly prove the truth, but the narrative of the second she said these things he was donezo simply isn't true. it was after these things were proven in a court of law he was donezo.

likewise according to the court depositions Disney representatives claimed, under oath, that the allegations were not the reason they dropped him from Pirates, full stop. according to his own agent Disney was undecided on asking him to return to the role and things were "trending badly" for Depp. this primarily because the 5th movie did much more poorly at the box office than its predecessors and Depp commanded a $100 million salary. there were also the widespread reports his addiction led to increasingly erratic behavior on the set, including showing up chronically late for filming. Heard's testimony may well have pushed Disney over the edge of a decision they were heading towards, but again the narrative is being distorted to increase the perception of Depp's victimization.

likewise the money she won came from their out-of-court divorce settlement, not the defamatory articles in questions. of the $3.5 million promised to the ACLU she donated only $450,000, but in a good wtf moment got Elon Musk to donate an additional $500,000 in her name. for what it's worth the ACLU has stood by her the entire trial, and under testimony showed a pledge form stating how she would donate the entire $3.5 million over the course of 10 years. she claims the donations have been delayed because of Depp's suits against her, which is at the least credible given he is suing her for more than her entire net worth.

personally i think she's getting cute with the donations, including getting her ultra-rich billionaire boyfriend to donate hundreds of thousands in her name so she can keep the difference, but ultimately there's been $1.3 million donated in her name despite being sued into potential bankruptcy. clearly she is a friend of the ACLU, for whatever reasons, and the narrative she didn't donate anything and never had plans to, or won the money because of the defamation suits, is, again, a bad distortion of reality on the side of overwhelming societal bias.

feel i need a second throat clearing lest misinterpreted. none of this proves Heard was an innocent victim. personally, as the other lad said, i find her a borderline personality disorder, greedy, and dishonest. i don't think she is a good person or was good to Depp. but also feel the societal reaction to this affair says more about us than it does about them. two damaged, shitty people with substance abuse problems hurting each other is not especially novel.

will say the justice system was made mockery of here. having the testimonies all over Tik Tok and Twitter, armchair analysis of every piece of evidence, the guilt predetermined in the public eye, and both parties, but especially Heard, subject to endless online harassment gutted any chance we had of reaching an impartial verdict.
