Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action-mimicking (but don’t call it animated) take on The Lion King let out more of a whimper than roar. But Jon Favreau’s 2019 remake also made $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. So in true spirit to the circle of life, a sequel is on its way.

Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk director Barry Jenkins confirmed on Tuesday he will take over from Favreau on the unsubtitled Lion King 2. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the remake, has already completed a script for the second chapter, according to Deadline, which reportedly dips into the backstories of the characters.

Deadline also reports that the sequel will explore the origin story of Mufasa, in a time-jumping move that mirrors The Godfather Part II, a movie kids love. The film is expected to feature new songs sung by animated lions that look like real lions.

Yeah we didn't mind Aladdin and we liked beauty and the beast.

Issue with Aladdin was always going to be that anyone they cast as Genie would never recapture the magic of Robin Williams original performance.

Will Smith did fine and they rightly adjusted the character to fit him, but the movie was always fighting an uphill battle.

That said, add me to the list that enjoys Aladdin the most of the recent remakes
