They arent ignorant hicks but they also are not coders. I come from a rural town that had mfg jobs decimated. I would rather be around these "ignorant hicks" than most of you, that doesnt make them suited for coding/tech jobs.

Also I am talking about retail workers as well that have nothing to do with being hicks, nor does this conversation have anything to do with understanding why people voted for Trump or how to persuade those people.

I'm with Day on this one, just telling people to learn to code is not the answer and it's a shitty solution. Not everyone is made for a desk job and are better off (or enjoy) doing some type physical labor or working with customers.

Being a solid coder will be like being a solid plumber in a decade, except that coding jobs can be outsourced and plumbing jobs cannot.

The big money in tech is moonshot startups that hit the moon, which isn't really scalable with number of devs seeking work. Working at those companies is the way you get paid as a coder, and it is only because Silicon Valley happens to be located in the US that the average coder's salary is high here. It isn't like making websites and shitty apps for people is particularly lucrative at the moment.

I honestly don't know what we should train people to do. Perhaps if everyone with a highschool degree had some amount of scripting ability, we could have them manage hoards of robots with simple scripts? Hard to even imagine, really.
