I would prefer Australia's system to ours.

Speaking of, the election defense fund changed their fine print again relating to donations.

Mandatory voting will just lead to Harambe votes.

"third party votes are just wasted votes"
    Unless Harambe actually wins.

This is probably one of the most successful gofundmes ever.

NBC is simultaneously calling AZ and GA for Biden and giving him a final count of 306 electoral votes.

In a ranked choice system I'm fine with this. Except that people probably won't pencil in a #2 or #3. The ballot would have to be rejected or considered incomplete until all choices are filled. Dunno how a system like that should work.

Or, you know, you could move to a system with more than two parties, so that third-party votes aren't wasted.

I think we are more likely to sell math to idiots than get them to go full parliament and both situations require constitutional amendments to implement nationally. Individual states could also implement ranked choice on their own.

With ranked-choice voting, I see 3+ party systems becoming WAY more viable.

Moving off a first past the post type voting system seems like it would encourage a lot more participation.

It would, after given time for more than 2 parties to develop, also result in more moderate presidents and basically block someone like Trump from ever having a shot at the presidency.

    So win/win, no?

I mean, it likely won't happen because that's essentially the death of the Republican Party, and would encourage younger politicians meaning the old blood would lose their seats, but yeah. One can always hope that once the current turtles start to die off or retire, it can encourage more progressive reforms.

almost every country that has first past the post voting has multiple parties, Canada, UK, India, et cetera, the United States is the exception and the fiction our two party system is the result of FPTP needs to end.

our unique political bifurcation is more likely the result of having neither mixed-member proportional representation nor a parliamentary system; additional parties serve a greater purpose when the executive branch is simply the leader of the legislative majority/plurality. whereas in the American system (presidential republic with direct federal elections) any party that does not win is useless at the executive level, in Parliaments these lesser parties may help establish coalition govs and effectively push for their constituents' concerns without ever having to win a majority/plurality.

and for what it's worth the idea more parties lead to more moderate candidates is fiction, the opposite is often the case as a party and a candidate that win a minority of ardent voters can attain s u p r e m e e x e c u t i v e p o w e r. indeed a cult-of-personality white nationalist like Trump would likely prove unstoppable in a more fractured political field, winning plurality after plurality.

that is, after all, how Hitler won despite never sniffing a majority. he destroyed the Weimar Republic with 33% of the vote.
