The thing is, though, with multiple parties, it's a lot harder for a single party to gain majority, which means they actually have to work together and/or evolve and listen to their constituents. Right now, whoever is a majority can just do whatever the fuck they want, case in point the Republicans. It would also encourage more voters to get involved politically and actually vote because there is a party that actually stands for their beliefs.

One of the issues with the Democratic party is that they're very split between the "old" democrats and the more progressive democrats, and the progressive democrats don't feel like the "old" democrats actually represent their beliefs, which leads to them either not voting, voting third party, sacrificing their beliefs to vote for the current party, or voting for "whoever is least worst."

More parties would encourage more voter participation, wouldn't require people to compromise in their beliefs as much, and would get representatives that actually represent what they believe in.

In my opinion, one of the issues is that politics is extremely charged and polarized in America, and a lot of people (even in congress) have a "if you're not with us, you're against us" attitude which ends up causing some large rifts, where the only goal is to fuck over the other side as much as possible rather than actually working together for the greater good.

Ranked choice voting is what results in more moderate candidates, specifically if you lean towards a variant like path voting. Having multiple parties does not itself protect you from extremism.

Haven't we gone over time and time again how this is what leads to populist parties gaining traction and only helps to further the chances of candidates like Trump who had a high floor but a very low ceiling in regards to his supporters.

Yes, it's possible that someone like Trump could win the presidency. But, as an example, imagine 3 parties, each get 33% of the vote (but Trump's party slightly more, let's say 33.8 with the others getting 33.1 so that he has a majority), that would still allow the 2 other parties to balance him out and not listen to his crazy ideas, as 66.2% would still be a majority over 33.8%.
