Mass Effect Trilogy: Legendary Edition (May 14, 2021)

Trying to cure Ashley of her space racism is a fun underlying plotline thru the trilogy if you save her.

Mass Effect 1 has some hidden character development paths for your squad mates that continue through the trilogy that not a lot of people encounter because it isn’t strictly tied to paragon/renegade.

If you encourage Ashley’s xenophobic tendencies she will become much more standoffish of alien races and colder to her non-human squad mates. If you foster tolerance and try to squash her xenophobia she’ll still be standoffish but will come to think of Garrus as a war buddy and Tali as her little sister.

If you try to harden Kaidan he will become more of a loner and fatalistic attitude about the war. If you encourage him and tell him it wasn’t his fault he killed his old instructor he will be more open and start teaching a biotic class off his own inbetween ME2 and ME3.

If you convince Garrus to believe in the system he will tell you he went back to C-Sec for a time and made some reforms before the start of ME2. If you convince him the system is beyond repair he will quit C-Sec and go vigilante for a while before ME2.

All of them will react slightly different to your major paragon/renegade decisions in later games depending on you shaped them. It’s kind of a neat feature most people really don’t see because they tend to go full paragon or full renegade.

Well, damn. I had never touched these games before but picked this up a few weeks back when it was on sale. Just finished up and about that ending. Oops?

ME3 was my big redemption arc. We're going to make up for some of the rotten things I did in the past! In some ways, it was going that way.

...and then at the very last moment of the game, when I'm walking towards the light and thinking I'm about to get a "good" ending with the synthesis or whatever, I stop to kind of take in the sights and all. Then I jokingly fire a bullet back towards that kid. If only I could have seen the look on my face when he's like "GJ idiot, that whole destruction cycle thing is back on." WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?

It has the option to just replay that final mission at the point where it's just walking/talking, but I think I have to live with this shame. I deserve this after cheating on Liara when I thought we were on a break.

Documentary about the ending of Mass Effect 3 with former BioWare employees. Worth a watch. They reveal what the original ending plans were.



If you don’t want to watch but just want to know what the original endings were:

Everything was pretty much the same up to the meeting with the Star Child. In the original versions there was no Star Child (other interviews have said it was added on the order of Casey Hudson). Instead, when Shepard reaches the Citadel master control room he/she essentially jacks a control wire into his Omni-tool and it brings up a virtual reality projection around him where he meets the “Reaper Queen”, who explains to him that the Reaper’s harvesting agenda is not sustainable and will eventually lead to the extinction of all life because the Reapers cannot evolve. When the Queen tried to explain this to the other Reapers they trapped her conscious inside a virtual prison in the Citadel where she has been stuck for a very long time. The Reaper Queen offers to help Shepard end the conflict, and Shepard is then given three endings to choose from.

Renegade Ending: Shepard says fuck you and all the Reapers, goes ham on the Citadel master control area and destroys it, the Citadel explodes, with the resulting shockwave destroying all the Reapers but also killing everything and everyone still on Earth. The rest of the galaxy, however, survives.

Paragon Ending: Shepard says fuck you to the Reaper Queen and erases her, and assumes control to become the Reaper King, losing his body but becoming the new Reaper AI. Shepard takes command of the Reapers and becomes a benevolent AI-god-type thing and ends the war.

Synthesis Ending: Shepard agrees to help the Reapers evolve so they will reach the same conclusion the Queen reached and stop the harvest. Shepard’s body combines with the Reaper Queen AI and they use the Citadel/Crucible to do pretty much what was done in the synthesis ending we got in the retail release.

The documentary mentions how much crunch they BioWare was in, and how the tri-colored ending animatics were a result of that. Most of the employees had no idea that was the direction they were going to take. After being in crunch to finish, things got much worse for them when BioWare announced the Extended Cut ending DLC only one month after release, so they all had to crunch AGAIN to get that out, when a lot of the team were already moving on to work on Dragon Age Inquisition.
