Seeing that I keep seeing getting people get buttblasted over the $1400 instead of $2000, yea, the messaging needed to be better. You really have to treat everyone like an idiot and break it down Barney style.

If I don't get a 2k stimulus, I will remember in 2022 and 2024, and still vote Democrat.

He used Florida as an example of the $15 min wage, but even Florida is phasing it in over x number of years.

But if Florida can do it than y'all can figure it out too god damnit

Like, with a roommate? Because a 1br in henderson and evansville is what, 600 a month? Car payment. Insurance. Health care. I figure after healthcare and taxes, that $600 weekly check turns into 350-400. I guess maybe it's liveable, but that's bare minimum living.

Come to Kansas, where a 1 bedroom costs like $800.

my 1br apt started at 450, now its 500/mo. its on bellmeade right by st vincent hospital so its a fine neighborhood. when i made minimum wage i absolutely had to live with a roommate. but 31k a year before taxes as a single person with no kids in this area is...fine. its not really bare minimum living, not even close. what would you say a moderate standard of living would start at here? not picking a fight, legitimately curious

I would say moderate would be the ability to buy a dependable car, afford rent/small house, have health insurance, be able to put money in retirement. And you should be able to do those things without living paycheck to paycheck and able to throw some money in savings. I just can't work that math out in my head on 15/hr. My dad raised me, alone, in the 1990s and made $15/hr. We were dirt poor.

We have multiple workers in our house and we're still having trouble with bills because of credit cards and loans used to get to this point.

Everyone knows Bay Area rent prices are astronomical (like NYC) but this exchange is making me weep

I also hate having roommates (other than partner)

Complete aside. I have a friend that's a nocturnist. He told me the hospital is starting to make him take calls for the patients that the residents (and their overseeing physicians) are attending after 7pm.

I was so pissed for him. I thought making 30 cents an hour and being on call all night was a coming of age for residents.

It is, it's supposed to be a carrot. I enjoy call, for the most part.

Obligatory grumble here about Bay Area rent.

Was just having a long conversation about this with a friend the other day and putting into perspective cost.

And how that's really hard to reconcile when you grew up in an area, or have friends/family that live in places where you didn't have to cash in stocks from tech companies.

It always perplexes my friends out here when I rent and say "Well if my math is right, I'm actually coming out ahead renting and investing the rest, and no owning is actually more expensive wtf"

Ugh. This couple on my Facebook are claiming the small business relief isn’t for them because their restaurant is on paper owned by the husband who is a white dude and that it’s targeting basically anything that’s not that. They are claiming they are “on their own.”
