He got in office and immediately established the expanded CTC for 2021, extended the student loan freeze until 2022, and extended the UI boost until September 2021.

That might be true but midterms are coming up and the window for him to accomplish anything else is closing.

Could he even cancel debt if he wanted to? Like it would require Congressional approval wouldn't it, and I'm sure as hell it wouldn't get past the Senate.

Their own gridlock has turned Congressional Democrats into knowledgeable advocates for strange and unusual uses of executive authority.

The answer is that Liz thinks he can do it without congress because she knows they can't pass it. He doesn't think he should do it for plenty of completely valid reasons. It's probably not getting done.

This is actually marginally less logically offensive than the brief hybrid position some people adjacent to Biden took (and maybe Biden himself?) which was that it was possible to cancel debt through the executive branch, but only up to $10,000.

I can't really blame people pushing for this. We haven't barely had a functioning congress during my lifetime, so anyone younger than me has only seen things happen through the executive branch. I think the question "what *can't* the president do?" is actually a fairly live one. The current supreme court is doubtlessly going to respond "depends on his party." abandon all hope ye who enter here

People born in 2006 will be able to vote in 2024. Doubtful either of them will be able to sway Gen Z/Gen Alpha like that.

Ugh, could we please push someone under 50 to avoid the whole "they're gonna die in office" or "brain rot" narrative. imo, the "inexperience" argument means shit after Trump and yet more wealthy old people couldn't be more disconnected from the rest of the nation.

Edit: Also don't underestimate the number of today's pre-voting age teens being Trumpian shitlords. Familial brainwashing is a thing, nevermind online meme culture.

    It's not impossible.

Nonetheless, the generational divides have reflected a decay in legislative priority for those 30 and below in pretty much all offices. Not really interested in rehashing earlier commentary about how our current nation life scheme makes it very difficult for anyone to get into politics before 35 if they're not already part of a dynasty.

I'll settle for not 80 as a start point. Though we're really not far removed from it. Clinton, GWB, and Obama were all <55. Clinton and Obama were in their 40s. Even GHWB was only 64.

Barely the bare minimum. There's so much more that can be done. Shit I've had a petition in for the past year and a half trying to get a portion of my loans deleted due to them being from a predatory college (Art Institute) that the US government actually went after and shutdown portions of and even that's not a simple "oh yeah, we bitch slapped these guys, you're right you shouldn't have loans from them".

Make student loans able to be deleted via bankruptcy again. Shit is stupid that only death can save you from them, colleges are charging out the ass for nothing and we pushed an entire generation or two that "college is the only way!!!". Thank god younger people are seeing that's such a load of bullshit and slowly getting wise to it all.

He probably should have spent those 11 months actually doing shit instead of bending over and letting 2 Democrats fuck him left and right on a single agenda item.

The infuriating part is that if more people turned out to give a majority instead of doing the whole fall in love thing more shit would get done.

What exactly can he do to them? Absolutely nothing. He pisses them off too much, they flip to republican, and then the Turtle is back in charge. Those two hold the power, know it, and they are going to get whatever they want while they can.

I don't believe any of their committees or anything were threatened, if Manchin went GoP he'd wither and die, his only selling points is literally "Oh i'm the Dems only hope in West Virginia!" He goes red and he gets primary'd immediately and he's gone in a second and he knows it. The Bi-Sexual queen herself? Dems made a huge mistake propping her up so quickly without seeing what she was all about. Why they would toss her into the mix of things and try to tie major bills to her at the start when she was brand new...and probably just because of the "She's a bisexual woman!!" angle.

I believe it's been discussed quite a few times that he has the ability to use an executive order to at least do something for the short term and as a show of faith. If the courts strike it down he can just point and say "I tried! I'm here for you but they won't let me pass it as a legit bill and this is all I had". Instead he doesn't do anything....because Dems are gonna rely on it in midterms and in the next election because they always fall back on "But GoP bad! THey do bad thigns vote for us!!" and then do nothing or barely anything when they get power.

To say "But what could he do?"...literally fucking anything instead of just rolling over and hand waving while going "Oh woe is us, these guys...I can't do anything. I'm in a pickle!"

Oh yeah, let's take away a committee, did you miss the part that at any moment of Biden or others push them too hard, they just say tough shit, filing to be a republican, they get back what they lost and the senate flips.

Want them to cooperate, get a serious primary challenge against them.

so what could he do tho

Manchin is still saying he's sticking to the 1.75T figure for reconciliation, but he doesn't want any short term programs that are "expected" to be made permanent, he wants new programs to be fully included for the ten year window instead of a year of CTC or a few years of pre-K or whatever.

Push them and see then, make them put up or shut up. Like I said, it would mean the end of his run in Congress if Manchin went red, dude has a shit ton of power right now where he stands. You think he's gonna give all that up over a single bill? Especially when earlier he talked about being in support of the cost of it, only to turn around later and go against it? There are whips in congress for a reason, fucking whip them. Hold their feet to the fire. Sinema's entire money making process is based around her being on committees, if you threaten to take her off them do you think energy groups are gonna lob cash at her still? Why would they?

I'd rather they both go red and people primary the fuck out of them, then them twiddle their thumbs and do the bare minimum all while decrying "oh woe is us, we can't do anything.....but if you vote for us next time then we'll get stuff done for sure "
